The debt is charged by a 75-year-old woman and has a value of approximately R$83.2 thousand. The lease refers to a commercial property in the Jardins neighborhood, in São Paulo, and began when the full-back played for São Paulo.
Preventively arrested in January 2023, Daniel stopped paying the rent in March of that year. In November, judge Marcela Martiniano, from the 25th Civil Court of São Paulo, ordered the sending of a letter rogatory (an instrument for communication between the courts of different countries) to Spain. At the time, the request was for the player to be cited regarding the charge at the penitentiary where he was held, in Barcelona, which did not happen.
The judge also later ordered Daniel’s attorney to be summoned by correspondence, but she was not found at the address. Recently, a new attempt was requested, this time via a court official.
Rape conviction
The Barcelona Court of Justice announced on February 22nd the sentencing of Daniel Alves to four and a half years in prison, considering that “rape was proven”, and also ordered a restraining order so that he cannot approach the victim for nine years. He will also have to pay compensation of 150 thousand euros (just over R$800 thousand).
On March 25th, Daniel left prison after obtaining the right to provisional release. To do this, he had to pay bail of 1 million euros (R$5.4 million) and hand over his passports to guarantee that he will not leave Spain.
After the conviction in the Barcelona Court, Daniel Alves’ case will still be evaluated by the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia. Both parties may appeal to the Supreme Court of Madrid, the highest body of Spanish justice. Therefore, provisional release does not mean that he was acquitted, but can only await the final judgment outside of prison. The victim’s lawyer classified the decision as a “scandal” and promised to appeal.
