Australian police have formally accused the 16-year-old boy of committing a “terrorist act” who stabbed a bishop several times in an Assyrian church in Sydney this week, the security force said on Friday (19, Thursday night in Brasília) .

The suspect, who was hospitalized after the attack, is expected to give evidence in juvenile court during the day, said Karen Webb, police commissioner for the New South Wales region.

The young man allegedly took a 90-minute journey to reach an Assyrian church in Sydney’s west and stabbed Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel six times.

Police filed terrorism charges after reviewing electronic devices in the suspect’s home and questioning him in his hospital bed.

If convicted, the young man, whose request to be released was denied, could be imprisoned for the rest of his life.

The police, however, did not detail what ideology could have motivated the boy to carry out the attack.
