The director of a prison in the province of Manabí, western Ecuador, was shot dead this Sunday (21), when a referendum was being held to tighten the war against organized crime, announced the penitentiary service (SNAI).
Damián Parrales, director of the Manabí Deprivation of Liberty Center number 4, known as “El Rodero”, “was the victim of an attack,” the agency said.
Ecuador’s prisons are centers of drug trafficking operations and the scene of massacres among prisoners that have left more than 460 people dead since 2021.
