Pro-Palestine protest held on the steps of the Turner Contemporary in Margate

A sit-in by pro-Palestine protestors has taken place at the Turner Contemporary art gallery in Margate.

The protest saw local group Thanet4Palestine gather on the steps of the gallery in an hour-long protest on Saturday – as well as criticising the Turner for not marking drawing attention to the conflict.

At the same time, other members of the group held a parade through Margate, with protesters reciting the names of children who have been killed in Gaza and holding up photos of some who have died.

Amber Trentham of Thanet4Palestine said: “More than 14,000 children have been killed in Gaza in seven months in the ongoing genocide perpetrated by the Israeli state against the Palestinian people, aided and abetted by our UK government.

“This weekend we have come together as a community to remember these kids. We honour them. And we stand with their loved ones who mourn them. In solidarity, in grief.”

One of the protesters, Christine Tongue, added: “I am shocked the Turner Contemporary Gallery, as our local leading cultural institution, has done nothing about Gaza. This is in striking contrast to the way, when the war in the Ukraine broke out, it illuminated the side of the gallery in the Ukrainian colours.

“And yet the human costs in Gaza have been so much greater. Surely the Turner can’t remain silent about this outrage?”
