BrasĂlia – Minister Paulo Pimenta (Secom) listed posts on social networks by deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro), senator Cleitinho Azevedo (Republicanos-MG) and the coach and former candidate in the elections 2022 Pablo Marçal in a request for an investigation into fake news related to the floods and their effects in Rio Grande do Sul. The list is in a letter addressed to the Minister of Justice, Ricardo Lewandowski, released by Pimenta this Tuesday (7).

“Recently, the Department of Social Communication was informed about the existence of disinformative and criminal narratives linked to the floods and environmental disasters that occurred in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. This letter aims to highlight these events, their relevance and impact on the deepening of the social crisis experienced by the population”, wrote the minister, who is from Rio Grande do Sul.

“I highlight with concern the impact of these narratives on the credibility of institutions such as the Army, FAB, PRF and Ministries, which are crucial in responding to emergencies. The spread of falsehoods can reduce the population’s confidence in the State’s response capabilities, harming efforts of evacuation and rescue in critical moments. It is essential that actions are taken to protect the integrity and effectiveness of our institutions in the face of such crises,” he said.

Next, Paulo Pimenta lists eleven posts on social networks that would be relevant – that is, that would constitute, in the minister’s view, fake news harmful to actions against floods and their effects. Broadcast PolĂtico reproduces below what Pimenta wrote about posts by Eduardo Bolsonaro, Cleitinho and Marçal.

Eduardo Bolsonaro

“Eduardo Bolsonaro criticized the Federal Government’s aid to Rio Grande do Sul, mentioning that the government took four (4) days to send reinforcements to the region. (Interactions: 4.8 thousand Subscribers: 2.8 million)”.

Pablo Marcal

In a video published on May 5, 2024 on platform of the State Treasury is blocking donation trucks’, ‘they are not allowing food and lunch boxes to be distributed’ and that ‘this is a political year, the media will not show what is happening properly, understand? Because of the politicians’. Such content, it is worth mentioning, has even been denied by the RS Finance Department and by news portals such as DiĂĄrio do Centro do Mundo”.

Cleitinho Azevedo

“In other videos circulating on different platforms, the same figure Marçal states: ‘I don’t understand why a single businessman has more helicopters there than the Brazilian Air Force. Until now I haven’t understood what this President is doing’. It is important to highlight that the content disseminated by Pablo Marçal has a wide reach and is taken as truth, replicated by other figures on different social media platforms. Among them, Senator Cleitinho Azevedo has also actively shared disinformative content on his social media platforms. In a post shared on the Instagram and you can’t help, don’t disturb those who are helping!’. The post also includes a video of the politician in which he displays Pablo Marçal’s content, Cleitinho reaffirms that the Rio State Finance Department. Grande do Sul would be blocking donations due to lack of invoice and sending them to the ‘fifth of hell’. In the end, the Senator also asks that whoever agrees with him share his video with the whole of Brazil.”
