Rio – The sexist statements by Vasco coach Ramón Díaz, 64, could result in punishment for the Argentine in Brazilian Championship matches. According to the lawyer specializing in sports law, president of the RJ football TJD; vice president of futsal in RJ and president of the OAB/RJ sports law commission, Renata Mansur, the coach runs the risk of being framed under Article 243G of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD), which provides for a penalty for discriminatory acts on grounds of sex, and receive up to ten games of punishment.

The coach’s statements can be included in the chapter that provides for infractions against sporting ethics and can be punished on and off the field. The situation is similar to that of John Textor, administrator of Botafogo’s SAF, having been denounced by the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) for having made accusations of manipulation in the 2023 Brazilian Championship games, after the end of the competition, without showing evidence, who was punished off the field.

After the 2-1 defeat to Bragantino, last Wednesday, Vasco’s coach criticized the performance of Daiane Muniz, responsible for VAR, in the match between Cruz-Maltino and Grêmio, last Sunday. The referee recommended reviewing a penalty awarded in favor of the Rio club, which ended up being annulled.

“With regard to the referees, we can’t say much. In the last match, the VAR was a lady, a woman, and it was a penalty. It seems complicated to me that the VAR who has to decide is a woman. Because football is so dynamic, with such quick actions. Today I don’t know if the referee didn’t also see the move, which looked like a penalty to me. Vasco is growing, we competed”, he said.

On the same day, Vasco regretted the Argentine’s sexist statement and in an official statement highlighted the values and principles as the institution’s historical mark. “Vasco da Gama regrets coach Ramón Díaz’s statement and reaffirms its commitment to reinforcing the necessary educational measures and guidelines in accordance with its determinations, values and principles. We apologize, as does our coach,” he published.
