The Premier League, the league that organizes the English Championship, announced that a referee will wear a body camera during a game in the competition, for the first time in history. The measure debuts this Monday with Jarred Gillett, who will be on the whistle at the match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United, at 4pm (Brasília time), in London.

The device called “RefCam” was developed for “single use for educational purposes” and will not broadcast the footage live, but fans will be able to view the content later as part of a Premier League production. According to the league, the objective is to provide information about refereeing in the English Championship.

Although it is new in English, the initiative was already used in the German Championship in February by referee Daniel Schlager. The game was Eintracht Frankfurt x Wolfsburg – it ended in a 2-2 draw. The video was used in a program for the Bundesliga, the league that organizes the German Championship, called “Referees Mic’d up”.

Furthermore, last year, referee Rob Jones used a body camera in Chelsea vs Brighton in the English football pre-season tournament. The game was 4-3 for the London team.

In Crystal Palace x Manchester United, Gillett will use a camera with technology integrated into the system that referees use to communicate during games, and the device must be close to the head. The match will be at Selhurst Park.
