The number of traffic accidents increased by 19.03% in the state of Rio in 2023, compared to the previous year, according to a survey by Detran.RJ. Statistical data from the agency also indicate that Monday afternoon is the time of the week with the most accidents. The profile of drivers with the highest occurrences are men aged between 18 and 29 years old. Campo Grande, in the West Zone of Rio, is the neighborhood where there were the most traffic accidents: there were 651, with 36 fatalities. Then comes Barra da Tijuca, with 523 accidents and 29 fatalities; Bangu, with 363 accidents and 15 deaths; Bonsucesso, with 339 accidents and 22 deaths; and Recreio dos Bandeirantes, with 348 accidents and 12 deaths. This year, the Yellow May campaign aims to reduce traffic violence and brings awareness actions such as lectures, educational activities in driving schools, companies and schools, Drivers’ Olympics, cultural walks and cycling tours, distribution of antennas for motorcyclists, forum at the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics.

The State Public Prosecutor’s Office sentenced Volta Redonda councilor Vander Temponi Faria to 25 years in prison and loss of office in the City Council for the practice known as “rachadinha”. Two other employees were also charged and sentenced to 13 years in prison each. Temponi will have to return R$105,000 to the public coffers, while his advisors R$61,000 and R$13,000. A fine was also determined as moral damage to the municipality, worth R$1 million for the three.
