Rules out reducing retirement age, but does see tax adjustments – El Financiero

Acapulco Guerrero.- Jorge Álvarez Máynez, presidential candidate of the Citizen Movementstressed that the retirement age cannot be lowered in Mexico because the country’s fiscal pressures do not provide that possibility.

“It doesn’t make sense to me. It doesn’t seem to me that it has generational elements. It does not seem to me to be healthy with the fiscal pressures that the country already has for spending,” he said on April 19 during his participation in the 87th Banking Convention.

Álvarez Máynez stated that making these adjustments would be an irresponsible position, although He did recognize that gradual adjustments have to be made to the system in what is related to separate the health and social protection system from the pension system.

“Mexico has to discuss the evolution of a health system that is not financed by worker-employer contributions which ends up being a double or triple burden for formality, which ends up punishing businessmen who register to workers at the IMSS”, he indicated.

He added that the health system “will never be universal if it is not financed with universal instruments, separating the pension system.”

Máynez warns that ‘a brutal fiscal problem’ is coming for the next six-year term

The Citizen Movement candidate asserted that the next six-year term will have a “brutal tax problem”which is why he finds it surprising, he stated, that the candidates who compete with him for the Presidency focus your proposals on spending more without fiscal logic.

His proposal on the matter is based on the implementation of green taxes and taxes on sectors that “are being practically subsidized by the Government such as tobacco companies, ultra-processed products.”

Máynez stressed that these changes would have to be applied gradually because doing so abruptly would harm productive activities.

“The best way to implement fiscal reforms has to do with a horizon of gradualness and certainty for the private sector, which can plan this scheme,” he noted.
