Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney break silence on doping scandal

There were a lot of weird remarks from Ryan Garcia before, during, and after he duked it with Devin Haney. A vast majority of the boxing world was shocked by the win. It was expected that they would fight for the WBC super lightweight belt but the first issue arose. The native of Los Alamitos exceeded the fight’s weight limit by three pounds. This matchup still happened but not a lot of people foresaw that a doping scandal would be why it was tarnished.

Ryan Garcia tested positive for Ostarine on two separate occasions. The first was the day before he duked it out against Devin Hanley, the other came on the day of the fight. There were also some samples obtained from him that indicated some traces of norandrosterone but further examination is needed to confirm the substance. Both of these are performance-enhancing drugs that the world of sports, boxing, and WBC world frowns upon.

Haney demands better

Devin Haney immediately took notice of the alleged unfair practice by Ryan Garcia. After all, Ostarine is not yet an approved drug by the USADA because there are no legal medications that contain it, via Mike Coppinger ESPN.

“We learned about this situation not too long ago and it’s unfortunate Ryan cheated and disrespected both the fans and the sport of boxing by fighting dirty and breaking positive not once, but twice,” the lightweight and light welterweight champion said.

He also doubled down on the fact that Garcia is not taking any of these seriously while also refusing to take accountability.

“Ryan owes the fans an apology, and by his recent tweet, he still thinks this is a joke. We put our lives on the line to entertain people for a living. You don’t play boxing. This puts the fight in a completely different light. Despite the disadvantage, I still fought on my shield and got back up! People die in this sport. This isn’t a joking matter,” he concluded.

What did Ryan Garcia say?

His response was quite simple. It was that he was not involved in the intake of any drug prior to the fight. Garcia hammered on the fact that the report was false on all fronts.

“Fake f***ing news. I never took a f***ing steroid in my f***ing life… I beat Devin fair and square,” he exclaimed.

A lot of fans are calling for a rematch between these two after the doping scandal. Some were demanding to give the win to Haney while others just wanted Garcia to be put in his place after testing positive. Nonetheless, the boxer from Los Alamitos was not having any of it nor was he going to make an effort to fight the former WBC champion once again. He made it abundantly clear in a post on X.

“Nah I ain’t going to rematch him. I beat him easy, fair and square. I’d be damned if I rematch him,” he wrote.

There is a heavy toll to pay once the WBC and the rest of the boxing world do confirm these reports. Alexander Povetkin was sentenced with a lifetime ban, which was lifted eventually, and a $ 250,000 fine.
