School in south suburbs briefly placed on lockdown Tuesday night after shooting reported outside building

RICHTON PARK, Ill. — A school in the south suburb of Richton Park was briefly placed on emergency lockdown Tuesday night after police received a call about a shooting outside the building.

According to Richton Park authorities, a phone call from the principal of Neil Armstrong Elementary around 6 p.m. alerted police to a shooting outside the school, which was holding an after-school basketball game with Marya Yates Elementary.

The school was placed on lockdown, and authorities say all participants from Marya Yates and Neil Armstrong schools were safe inside while police were outside surrounding the building.

According to authorities, police apprehended and arrested an assailant, and the gun used in the incident was also recovered by police.

Authorities say police lifted the lockdown by 6:20 p.m., and everyone safely left the premises.
