Seal pup rescued from Joss Bay in Broadstairs

A seal pup with “severe breathing issues” has been rescued after it was found on a beach.

The three-month-old male was spotted on Joss Bay in Broadstairs at about 9.30am today.

The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) was called, and medics rushed to the animal’s aid.

Volunteer Shelia Stone said: “He had severe breathing issues.

“He was lifted and transported to RSPCA Mallydam’s rehabilitation centre in Hastings.

“The pup is receiving the treatment it needs, and will hopefully make a full recovery.”

The mammal weighed 28kg, slightly underweight for his age.

If you see a young seal on the shore, you should keep dogs and children away, give it space and call the BDMLR on 01825 765546.

Seals are wild animals and although they can look harmless, they will defend themselves aggressively if necessary.

They should never be encouraged or pushed back into the sea.
