Senate votes down Mayorkas impeachment

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Wednesday, Senate Democrats voted down articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. He became the second U.S. cabinet secretary ever impeached by the House.

The Senate democratic majority voted down two articles of impeachment, charging Alejandro Mayorkas with failing to enforce immigration law and breach of public trust.

“If we allowed that to happen it would set a disastrous precedent for Congress,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer argued the impeachment of Mayorkas over “policy disagreements” did not meet the constitutional bar of high crimes and misdemeanors.

Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman said the process is a waste of time.

“This was a really bad show I was forced to watch,” said Fetterman.

Missouri Republican Senator Eric Schmitt and Louisiana’s Bill Cassidy pushed back slamming Democrats for dismissing the trial.

“He’s pressed the button on the nuclear option for impeachment trials. I think he’s going to regret that sooner rather than later,” said Schmitt.

Senate Majority Leader Schumer says the Senate can get back to business as usual.
