Angra dos Reis – The Catholic community of the Bonfim neighborhood, in the center of Angra dos Reis/RJ, woke up today, Sunday(5) to a festive dawn, with the band from Colégio Naval, in honor of the Lord of Bonfim, followed by a solemn mass in the little church named after the saint, built on the islet in front of the town and celebrations for the patron saint throughout the day, with shows by local bands and typical food stalls.
The traditional Festa do Senhor do Bonfim began last Thursday,( 2), and this year celebrates its 244th anniversary. Until Sunday, the 5th, the Bonfim community, located on Estrada do Contorno, will enjoy an extensive religious program, including masses and processions, as well as typical foods, tallow sticks and shows. A big party in the small village.
During the three days of the triduum – religious exercises that are repeated or prolonged for three days – there were masses in the little church. The faithful were transported by boat, free of charge, in partnership with the city hall, so that no one was left out of the celebrations for Senhor do Bonfim. The Sunday of the Festa do Senhor do Bonfim started very early with the scheduled activities. At 5:30 am, there was a moment of penance through the streets of the neighborhood, followed by a dawn with the band from Colégio Naval at 6 am. At 10 am the great festive mass was celebrated, with the transfer of the image of Senhor do Bonfim; At 4pm, there will be a procession through the streets of the neighborhood.

The festival of Senhor do Bonfim is steeped in a rich cultural and religious history that is related to a legend that tells of a fisherman who found an image of Christ Crucified in a stone in Batista das Neves cove. After handing it over to a friar, the image mysteriously returned to the place where it was found for three consecutive days. In light of this incident, a chapel was built at the site and the image remains there to this day, facing the stone where it was found.
