Shortage of teachers: these high school students from Moselle write directly to the rector

“Some express anger, others attachment to their school with touching expressions…” SNES FSU union delegate, Dominique Moget will submit this Monday, May 6 afternoon, more than 200 letters from Fameck high school students (Moselle) on the office of the town hall of this commune of Moselle.

Around Mayor Michel Liebgott, the municipality decided to support in its own way the movement of anger expressed by the students. It will bear the cost of the Post Office for this original operation.

The objective of these Saint-Exupéry high school students who each wrote an individual letter intended for the rector of the Nancy Metz academy: to denounce the shortage of teachers from which their establishment suffers. Teachers had already mobilized at the end of March 2024 through a day of strike, giving up a day’s salary. The demand has this time taken a step forward, with the initiative to encourage high school students to express themselves.

“They also reflect a form of feeling of abandonment by the authorities”

“It was necessary and positive that students and parents of students came forward in turn. We just asked them to express their personal feelings, of course, but while remaining within the legal framework of courtesy and politeness,” explains Dominique Moget.

For several months now, the Fameck establishment has suffered from a shortage of teachers in various subjects, particularly German. “One of our students had originally taken the personal initiative of writing to the minister,” she continues. As the situation is not changing, we wanted to mark the occasion.”

The operation was favorably received by the baccalaureate candidates, who put on their finest writing. “Their letters sometimes contain nuggets,” notes the union representative. They also reflect a form of feeling of abandonment by the authorities. It’s not because we are in Fameck, where we feel a little apart, that we should be forgotten.”

According to Dominique Moget, the absence of several teachers deprives the establishment of teaching in decisive subjects. “In physics, certain classes, of which this is the specialty, have not had a specific course since December, even though it is an important coefficient in the baccalaureate test. It is necessary to alert…”
