Spanish tourist falls into a coma in the middle of his honeymoon; Cancun hospital charges 145 thousand per day – El Financiero

The family of a young Spanish man admitted in an induced coma to the ICU of a hospital in Cancun, Mexico) asks for help to pay for the more than 8 thousand euros per day (145 thousand pesos) of health expenses that they have to assumeafter the medical insurance contracted for the trip has informed them that it can no longer cover the costs.

Adrián Fernández and his wife, Sofía Parada, were on their honeymoon in a hotel in Cancunalong with his 7-year-old son, when last Sunday he suffered a digestion interruption in the pool and a subsequent drowning that caused cardiorespiratory arrest.

As Marta Parada, the young man’s sister-in-law, explained to EFE, the lifeguards managed to revive him and he was transferred to the nearest hospital, an hour from the hotel, where entered in critical condition.

From there he was transferred to another medical center with an induced coma and two days after his admission the health insurance informed them that they had exceeded the maximum allowed, about 25 thousand euros (454 thousand pesos).

The young man remains in a coma, in a critical phase, so he cannot be transferred to Spain to continue his medical treatment, he warned.

Sofía and Adrián’s parents and one of her brothers have moved to Mexico, while the family tries raise money to pay healthcare costs.


According to Parada, they also contacted the Spanish consulate in Mexico, which told them that they can help them process the documentation but not cover the medical expenses.

Faced with this situation, they decided to go to the media to ask for citizen solidarity to help them overcome “this nightmare.”

The family has opened the account “Family nightmare in Cancun” on the GofunMe platform aimed at raising funds and asks the Spanish authorities to intercede with the Mexican women to alleviate their “desperate” situation.

The family of another Spanish tourist who is seriously ill in a hospital in Monterrey (Mexico) has requested help from the Spanish authorities to be able to return, after traveling accompanied by his wife to see his daughter he suffered, among other pathologies, a diffuse alveolar hemorrhage and had to spend a few 90 thousand euros (1 million 635 thousand pesos) after twenty days in a hospital.
