These are the ‘red zones’ in the 2024 elections – El Financiero

Almost 30 percent of electoral sections in Mexico have some risk of violenceeither towards the candidates or towards those who will go to vote in the June 2 electionsas warned this Thursday by the opposition coalition Fuerza y Corazón por México.

“Today we are making an early, timely alert so that the Mexican State, through its different authorities, guarantees free, secret and peaceful voting,” said Santiago Creel, campaign coordinator of the opposition presidential candidate, in a press conference. Xochitl Galvez.

The representatives of the National Action (PAN), Institutional Revolutionary (PRI) and Democratic Revolution (PRD) parties, which make up the coalition, demanded that the Government of Mexico guarantee free and peaceful elections, before the murder of at least 15 applicants, according to official figures.

Opposition presents risk map for violence in the 2024 elections

They presented a ‘Risk Map of the 2024 Election’, in which they explain the electoral sections that are potential sources of violence in the elections due to the presence of criminal organizations that have operated in the country in past elections, according to Creel.

“The purpose of this risk map is to identify where immediate actions should be carried out to guarantee the free exercise of the vote without any type of coercion, intimidation or violence,” he stated.

According to the data collected by the coalition, through studies and reports from organizations such as Data cívica, México Evalúa, Integralia and Semáforo Delictivo, they detected that at least 20 percent of the electoral sections have a high risk of electoral violence, while 8.9 percent have a medium risk.

“Suman 29 percent of the sections of this country in which there is some type of risk, from risk towards the candidates to the risk of going to vote,” he warned. Rubén Moreira, former governor of Coahuila of the PRI and coordinator of the Gálvez security table.

Which states are most at risk in the 2024 elections?

Moreira revealed that the states with the greatest danger are Quintana Roo (93 percent), Guerrero (83 percent), Tabasco (85 percent) and Zacatecas (79 percent)

“Zacatecas is a very complicated state because, in addition, 97 percent of the people who live in Fresnillo feel insecure. Zacatecas has had 14 victims, including candidates, officials, family members and members of the security force”, he noted.

Given this panorama, Noemí Luna, general secretary of the PAN, asked the National Electoral Institute (INE) to intervene in the sections where there is a greater risk.

“Let him take charge of the calculation of the result. What we want are free elections, what we want is to guarantee the right of citizens to vote freely. “Democracy means being able to choose without pressure,” he said.

They stated that they have already delivered this map to the president of the INE, Guadalupe Taddei; to Mónica Soto, president of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF); and to the Secretariats of Security and Citizen Protection, of the Interior, of the National Defense and of the Navy.

The objective, Creel stressed, is alert electoral authorities in a timely manner so that violent acts do not occur during the elections and “they are carried out in peace and so that citizens can exercise their vote freely and authentically.”
