Through a call, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador launched a series of requests to his American counterpart, Joe Biden, on migration, the immigration crisis and policies from both countries.
López Obrador said in a statement that the call was productivein addition to the fact that there was mutual interest with the objective of addressing immigration problems at the border, after the Texas government promoted a series of measures against migrants such as the use of spiked fencing on its borders.
The determinations of the Texas government, headed by Greg Abbotunleashed an internal crisis in the United States, which led to Joe Biden to say that he could close the border with Mexico as a solution to differences with Texas but worsening the migration crisis that the region is going through.
President López Obrador responded and said that Biden’s initiative was “demagogic,” and He assured that these types of measures were for an electoral issuegiven that The United States will define the continuity of Joe Biden or the return to power of Donald Trump this year.
It was in this context that the call arose, in which the Mexican government said that “any law that ignores the migratory phenomenon is condemned to become a dead letter.”
What requests did AMLO make to Biden?
Some of the initiatives he proposed López Obrador in order to solve the migrant crisis and heal the problems that exist on the border are:
- Regularize all Mexicans who have been working for five years “honestly” in the United States.
- A budget of 20 billion dollars a year to support vulnerable countries in Latin America where people are condemned to migrate.
- Suspend sanctions on Venezuelawhich will reduce the migratory flow.

- Maintain the migrant reception program legally to the United States.
- Do not consider building more border walls nor close itgiven that “it does not solve the causes of the migration or solve the problem. “It is pure political-electoral propaganda.”
- Fight drug trafficking and the fentanyl epidemic.
- Regulate the sale and export of weapons from the United States to Mexico.
- A joint development plan for industrialization and trade, which eventually allows defining an integration strategy throughout the continent.
