TIM reported this Tuesday, 7th, that, in Rio Grande do Sul, there are 20 isolated cities, without internet service from the operator, and another 100 in which the provision of services is happening partially. The operator provided bonuses so that residents of affected areas can communicate with relatives and friends.
The floods caused damage and/or difficulty in accessing towers and antennas for maintenance purposes. Another point that causes problems for telcos are power cuts (although many of the cuts are voluntary, as security measures adopted by distributors).
The president of TIM, Alberto Griselli, stated that the company created a crisis committee to deal with the flood situation. The priority, according to him, is the safety of employees.
Technical teams are in the field to maintain the infrastructure and guarantee service continuity within access and security possibilities.
In addition, TIM is offering a 10 Gb bonus on data packages to help customers in the region maintain continuous communication with family and friends.
Another point is the offer of data roaming, in conjunction with Claro and Vivo, so that users can connect to all available operator networks if any of them have problems.
“We will see the financial impact, but it is not our priority at the moment”, commented Griselli when asked about the topic at a press conference, reinforcing that the focus is on the cities’ initiatives above.
He only commented that Rio Grande do Sul represents 3% of TIM’s total consumer base. “It’s something relatively small, we haven’t done the calculations yet (of the financial impacts). After the situation normalizes, we will focus on the topic.”
