Pressured by legal problems, former American President Donald Trump holds a rally in North Carolina this Saturday (20), his first major campaign event since the start of trial itself in New York.

The Republican tycoon will speak in Wilmington, a city in this state closely contested with his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, in the presidential elections on November 5th.

The man hoping for a triumphant return to the White House is on trial in New York for hush-hush payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels to allegedly buy her silence about an extramarital affair before the 2016 election, which she won against Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Trump, who denounces a “witch hunt”, has protested the trial several times. “I should be in Pennsylvania and Florida right now, and in many other states, in North Carolina, in Georgia, campaigning,” he said indignantly this week.

On Friday, he again attacked the judge leading his case, historic for being the first criminal case against a former president of the United States.

“This is election interference on a level never before seen in the United States,” he said on his Truth Social platform.

“If a president is not granted immunity, any president who leaves office will be immediately impeached by the opposing party,” he said.

Even though no Democratic presidential candidate has won North Carolina since Barack Obama in 2008, Biden believes he has a chance in this state.

Although Trump won twice, in 2016 and 2020, Biden narrowly lost in the last election. The Democrat tries to take advantage of his opponent’s legal problems, busy with the courts several days a week, and prepares the ground.

On Tuesday, he was in his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, also a hotly contested state crucial to the November elections.

While he has long avoided commenting on Trump’s problems, Biden threw an arrow this week, saying he would be “very busy right now.”

The White House assured that Biden is not following news of the process, stating that the president “focuses on Americans.”

The trial coincides with Biden’s advance in the polls since delivering his State of the Union address in March. Now the two candidates are side by side.

But Trump and his supporters hope to take advantage of the media attention surrounding his criminal trial, saying it offers an exceptional platform from which to campaign.
