UANL announces initiative against lung cancer – El Financiero

The Autonomous University of Nuevo León, through the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital, presented the University Initiative against Lung Cancer, a disease that ranks third in causes of death in Mexico.

The initiative focuses on the axes of prevention, timely diagnosis through artificial intelligence software that helps improve the opinion and increase the survival rate for the benefit of Monterrey society and Mexico.

The event was led by the Rector of the UANL, Santos Guzmán López, who was accompanied by Samuel García Sepúlveda, Governor of Nuevo León; Óscar Vidal Gutiérrez, director of the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital; Valentina Gallart, medical director of AstraZeneca; and Alma Rosa Marroquín, State Secretary of Health.

Guzmán López mentioned that science and technology have come together to face public health challenges and impact specific threats such as lung cancer and cardiac emergencies.

“It is necessary that as an educational and research institution we create synergy with the State Government and join its health projects, such as this initiative and the cardio-safe spaces that we installed on the University’s Health Campus,” said Santos. Guzmán López, Rector of the UANL.

He added that, thanks to these alliances, the University Hospital facilities have been equipped with cutting-edge technology and that each project that the State proposes to carry out in health matters will have the support of the UANL.

He also mentioned that of a total of 10,202 chest x-rays, 5,209 have already been analyzed, resulting in 711 with some pathology in the lung, in addition to 648 having been classified as suspicious through artificial intelligence software located in the Radiology Unit and Image from the UANL.

“This represents a watershed because the UANL and Nuevo León are being placed in the eyes of the world of cutting-edge medicine and this alliance will provide the possibility of providing treatment at all levels to all people who are affected by this disease. ”, explained Óscar Vidal Gutiérrez, Director of the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital.
