Water scarcity in Mexico is an undeniable reality that requires immediate attention and concrete solutions. Access to drinking water is a basic need and a fundamental human right; the responsible management of this resource in our country is urgent. In the midst of this problem, the mining industry has become an example of commitment and responsible action in the management and care of water.
There are various myths surrounding mining, since the information that is erroneously transmitted corresponds to past practices. Responsible and modern mining, which is represented in the Mexican Mining Chamber, is constantly at the forefront, implementing continuous learning processes and with great environmental awareness. In recent decades, companies have adopted significant measures to mitigate any impact, seeking the well-being of the communities near their operations.
One of these myths is that this sector is one of the most intensive in water consumption, the reality is that according to the latest information available from the National Water Information System of Conagua, 5% of the total volume is concessioned to the industrial sector in general; Regarding the mining industry, the concessioned volume represents only an estimated 0.27% of the total national volume. This demonstrates responsible and limited use of the resource by the affiliated mining sector.
Furthermore, water reuse and recirculation play a crucial role in the water management strategy of mining companies. Nearly 70% of the water consumed comes from treated and recirculated wastewater, demonstrating a real commitment to efficiency and sustainability in the use of this shared resource.
Some tangible examples of these responsible practices are the more than 100 water treatment plants operated by mining companies in 16 states of the Republic (CAMIMEX Sustainability Report 2023); as well as the various initiatives to support communities, such as cooperation in the acquisition of rainwater collectors, the drilling of wells for human consumption and the construction of drinking water distribution networks. With these types of actions, mining companies reflect their commitment to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.
Proper water management is everyone’s responsibility. In the industrial sector it is essential both for the effective execution of the business strategy, to maintain the trust of interest groups, but above all to fulfill our social and environmental commitment. The mining industry in Mexico has shown that it is possible to achieve a balance between economic development and environmental preservation, being an example of good practices in water management carried out by the sector. It is essential that everyone, citizens and industry, actively contribute to its conservation and sustainable use.
