MCHENRY COUNTY, Ill. — The strong winds that damaged a two-story barn in Harvard on Tuesday, killing at least four animals and trapping dozens more, were produced by an EF-0 tornado, meteorologists confirmed.
Scientists from the National Weather Service’s Milwaukee office surveyed the area on Wednesday and said the tornado traveled north from Harvard to Walworth, Wis., a little more than 10 miles away.
On the Enhanced Fujita scale, an EF-0 has winds between 65 and 85 MPH and typically produces minor damage.
First responders were called to the collapsed barn on the 10800 block of Weidner Road, in unincorporated Harvard, just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. At least four animals were confirmed to have died, but 24 sheep, 18 goats, a cow, and multiple chickens and ducks were pulled from the rubble. Two other animals were said to be missing late Tuesday.
Officials said no people were injured in the barn collapse.
