The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will hold public hearings on April 30 and May 1 to hear the arguments of Mexico and Ecuador on the precautionary measures requested against Quito after assault the Mexican Embassy to arrest Jorge Glasformer vice president of Rafael Correa (2007-2017), on April 5.

Mexico initiated this case arguing the existence of a dispute centered on “legal issues regarding the resolution of international disputes by peaceful means and diplomatic relations, and the inviolability of a Mexican diplomatic mission in Quito.
But before entering into deliberations on the case, Mexico considered it necessary to issue precautionary measures against Ecuador and asked the ICJ to require Quito “to take appropriate and immediate measures to provide full protection and security of diplomatic facilities, their property and archives, preventing any form of intrusion against them.”
Furthermore, he believes that the Court should urge the Ecuadorian Government to allow Mexico “to clear the diplomatic facilities and the private residence of diplomatic agents,” and that “no action be taken that could prejudice the rights of Mexico with respect to any decision.” ” that the ICJ can issue on the merits of the dispute.
He President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboaassured on Monday that he does not regret having ordered that assault on the Mexican embassy.
Faced with the almost unanimous condemnation of the international community for breaking the inviolability of a diplomatic headquarters, Noboa admitted that “it was a very difficult decision to make”but he did it because his Government considers that it was Mexico the first to violate international conventions.
He also justified that the Caracas Asylum Convention states that asylum cannot be given to a person prosecuted in ordinary courts for common crimes.
Former Vice President Glas had an arrest warrant for misappropriation of public funds and pre-trial detention in connection with reconstruction works after the strong earthquake that occurred in 2016.
