Why aren't Chicago's Jackson Park Cherry Blossoms blooming?

CHICAGO — Although spring showers bring May flowers, the eye-catching South Side cherry blossoms in Jackson Park will not bloom this year.

The gorgeous view that resides just outside of Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry will be halted as the cherry blossoms are not expected to bloom for another year in a row.

According to the Chicago Park District, the erratic spring fluctuation has caused the cherry blossom buds to not bloom this year.

On their website, the park district said that some buds were able to blossom in late March/early April, but were quickly ruined due to strong winds, snow and rainy weather that followed. The trees went from bud phase 2 and nearly opening to leafing out in one step, without blossoming.

More than 20 trees are expected to be planted for 2025 and 2026.
