Will the judges no longer be able to stop AMLO’s initiatives? Senate approves reform of the Amparo Law – El Financiero

With 69 votes in favor and 42 against, The reforms to the Amparo Law were approved in the Senate of the Republicwith which the representatives of the Judiciary could not prevent the consolidation of certain reforms approved in Congress.

This is a series of modifications to articles 129 and 148 of the Amparo Law, and although it is guaranteed that the right to amparo will continue, opposition legislators insist that it is a measure with which the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador will ‘shield’ the carrying out of works, as well as the establishment of reforms in the Constitution even if these have alleged irregularities.

The reform of the Amparo Law consists of removing from judges the power to provisionally and definitively suspend laws that have been challenged through the Amparo Law.

The opposition assures that this is a “revenge” by López Obrador against the judges, who through the finding of irregularities have not allowed the passage of constitutional reforms such as the electoral one proposed in 2022 and the ‘plan B’ of the same proposed in February from last year.

This initiative was raised by Ricardo Monreal, coordinator of the Morena bench, who explained that the objective is for the Judiciary to respect what was agreed upon in the Legislature so that the reforms voted in the Chamber of Deputies and the Chamber of Senators do not be limited through amparo proceedings.

Thanks to this type of resolutions from the Judiciary, sections of the Mayan Train have been suspended, as well as some other works and laws due to irregularities.
