Rio – Evicted from properties due to default on rent, two women from Rio Grande do Sul have been “living” for almost three months in an MC Donald’s located on the corner of Carlos GĂłis and Ataulfo de Paiva streets, in Leblon, South Zone of the city, the few meters from the sea. The neighborhood has one of the most expensive square meters in the country. The case was revealed by CBN and confirmed by DAY.

The women – mother and daughter – were identified as Susane Paula Muratoni Geremia, aged 64, and Bruna Muratori Geremia, aged 31. They carry five large suitcases, where they store clothes and everything that belongs to them, and have been seen daily in the cafeteria since the carnival.

The place opens at 10am and closes at 5am. During this period, they stay at a table next to the door the entire time and eat their own snacks from the food chain. When the unit closes, between 5am and 10am, Susane and Bruna sleep on the sidewalk. They wait for the doors to open to return to their usual table.

It is noteworthy that they have cell phones, always wear clean clothes, carry suitcases and backpacks in good condition and have money to pay for what they consume in the store and other businesses in the region.

In an interview, mother and daughter explained that they have lived in Rio de Janeiro for eight years. The oldest clarified that she is looking for a rental in Leblon for up to R$1,200, something unimaginable nowadays. She stated that she is visiting apartments in the region and choosing a new home. Until then, she prefers not to spend money and waits for the new house to appear.

After talking for a few minutes with Susane, a military police officer clarified that the corporation’s hands are tied, since women do not accept help from residents or the Public Authorities:

“As there is no crime, there is nothing we can do as law enforcement agents. Our job is to calm things down and not let the situation generalize. I, as a human being, am praying for them. What worries me is her well-being “, said the agent.

Defaults and evictions

Bruna and Suzane respond and have already been convicted – both in Rio Grande Sul and Rio de Janeiro – for not paying rent. In Porto Alegre, there were at least two cases of this type. In 2017, for example, they were convicted by the state Court of Justice for defaulting for four months, between August and November. The debt totaled almost R$10 thousand.

In Rio de Janeiro, the first records are from 2019. There are at least three debts in both their names. In one of them, the Court condemned both and ordered their eviction, for accumulating a deficit of R$ 13,252.36. In another, the judge’s assessment was that it was a case of hyposufficiency, that is, they did not have the financial conditions to pay the debts.
