The Itaguaí Women’s Secretariat, in partnership with the Department of Road Transport of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Detro-RJ), promoted this Monday morning (29), at the city’s bus station, an action to raise awareness and combat harassment and sexual harassment on public transport.
“The victims cannot remain silent, and the people who are watching have to help and report these criminals. We know that this, unfortunately, happens inside buses and vans. We can no longer allow it”, highlighted the Itaguaí Women’s Secretary, Juliana Rodrigues Silva.
According to data from the Public Security Institute (ISP) of Rio de Janeiro, cases of sexual harassment and harassment on public transport have been a growing concern. In 2023, more than 500 reports of harassment on buses and trains were registered in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro.
During the action carried out this morning, agents from the Women’s Secretariat and Detro-RJ spoke to passengers and drivers and distributed pamphlets with information and step-by-step instructions for reporting complaints.
Sexual harassment is any libidinous act with the aim of satisfying a desire. The penalty for this crime is imprisonment for 1 to 5 years. Harassment occurs when the aggressor uses his superior position in a job, position or function to threaten the victim. For this crime, the penalty is imprisonment for 1 to 2 years and is increased by up to a third if the victim is under 18.
In the case of sexual harassment, it is important to keep information such as time, date, bus/van route, clothing and physical characteristics of the aggressor and vehicle order number. Then, call a customer service channel.
