The construction of the Mayan Train has affected at least 122 cavesclaimed the hydrologist and member of the Sélvame del Tren collective, Guillermo D’Christy.
Through his social networks, he accused that, so far, there are “more than 122 caves affected, destroyed or filled in.”
Furthermore, the activist said that in the last cave visited, called Boox Balam, you can already see stones and machinery, although a year ago you could dive there.
On other occasions, D’Christy has denounced the damage that the Mayan Train work is causing in the caves in the area.
Just at the end of January, the hydrologist shared a video in which you can see the drilling that is being carried out in section 5despite a judicial suspension which stopped construction.
With these images, the ecologist recalled that the government had promised not to affect the cave system in the area.
“We were supposed to protect this system of caves and cenotes, and the promise was that they were not going to be touched,” claimed the activist.
Likewise, D’Christy insisted that they are indeed perforated and Concrete is being injected into the area’s caverns.

On the other hand, Gemma Santana, who is also part of the Sélvame del Tren collective, has joined the criticism of the destruction of the cave system.

These works have already caused problems in the region, since They are causing the area’s underground rivers to become contaminated.

It is also necessary to highlight that, by continuing with these works, the government falls into alleged contempt of a judicial suspension that ordered, at the end of January, the suspension of all work on section 5.
