14-year-old charged in teen's deadly shooting during downtown gathering

CHICAGO — A 14-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree murder for allegedly shooting a 17-year-old to death during a gathering downtown last month.

Officers were already in the 500 block of West Roosevelt Road on the night of March 2. Around 200 teens were gathered at the time when shots were fired just after 8 p.m.

Jeremy Smith, 17, was struck and transported to a hospital in critical condition. A 15-year-old boy was shot in the leg and survived.

Smith didn’t.

His family said he was taking part in a Facebook meet up downtown when he was shot.

“I wish I was there. My son didn’t tell me everything,” Jeremy’s mother Rhonda Baker said.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested Monday morning in the 100 block of South Central Park Boulevard. He’s been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery.

A GoFundMe was set up for funeral expenses.
