ALAMEDA COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) — The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday that it has concluded its reexamination of the 2021 in-custody death of Mario Gonzalez.
Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price will be holding a news conference at 6 p.m. Thursday and it will be streamed in the media player above.

The family of Mario Gonzalez, who died in custody of Alameda police in April 2021, are demanding officers face charges following the autopsy ruling.
This announcement comes after Price announced in January 2023 that she would be reopening investigations into several fatal police shootings and in-custody deaths.
On April 19, 2021, Alameda police responded to a call for a disorderly person in a public park. Police body camera video showed officers pinning Gonzalez’s face down to the ground for approximately 6 minutes and 17 seconds.
The Alameda County Coroner’s autopsy report concluded the cause of death for Gonzalez was the “toxic effects of methamphetamine” with other significant conditions as the “physiologic stress of altercation and restraint, morbid obesity and alcoholism.” The manner of death was classified as a homicide.
In Decemeber 2023, the city of Alameda agreed to pay $11 million to the son of Gonzalez to settle a wrongful death lawsuit. The city also agreed to pay $350,000 to Gonzalez’s mother.
