Mariano Sánchez, coordinator of the Commission’s research team, explained that according to the study, there was an excess of deaths from COVID-19 of 37 percent.
“Approximately 300,000 deaths are not attributable to the pre-pandemic conditions of the country,” he said at a press conference.

“We have a clear conscience: We work hard to save lives, Mexico was one of the first countries in the world to obtain vaccines, but not only that, in five months We vaccinate all older adults in Mexico with a first dose of the vaccine and many deaths were avoided because we set up hospitals; Equipment was obtained that did not exist because, imagine, how we inherited the Health sector,” he commented.
President López Obrador highlighted the help of the Secretariats of National Defense and the Navy to distribute the millions of doses of COVID vaccines, “always with the opposition who are really showing that they have no scruples of any kind, that they traffic in people’s pain, that the only thing they care about is money.”

Mariano Sánchez explained that, although before the pandemic, Mexico had low investment in health and a prevalence of chronic diseases and social inequalities, there were other conditions that put Mexico in a “relatively” favorable situation before the arrival of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
“For example, its demographic structure. “Mexico has a population, on average, younger than some European countries that were hit hard by the pandemic and we know that COVID was a more lethal disease in the older adult population,” she described.
He pointed out that, when considering these pre-pandemic structural conditions, the country’s average performance would have been about 500 thousand excess deaths, the number of deaths from all causes above those expected under normal conditions. However, according to official data, throughout the health emergency there were 808,619 excess deaths.
