Daily Camera staff members received seven awards for journalism in the Colorado Society of Professional Journalist Region 10 Top of the Rockies contest.
The Top of the Rockies contest divides newsrooms into four divisions based on newsroom size. The Daily Camera competed in the large newsroom division against other news organizations from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
Awards included first-place wins for columns, editorials, obituary reporting and sports news; second-place wins for sports photography and videography; and third-place wins for climate photography and videography and feature photography and videography.
Opinion Editor Gary Garrison won first place in the column category and first place in the editorial category, with judges noting that Garrison “seems like a voice of reason in a world of partisan hatred.”
Reporter Amber Carlson won first place in the obituary reporting category for her article on how one Boulder resident used medical aid in dying to end her life.
Photographer Cliff Grassmick won second place in the news photography and videography category and the spot news photography and videography category for his work covering new citizens and a structure fire.
Photo Editor Matthew Jonas won third place in the sports photography and videography category for his coverage of the U.S. Junior National Whitewater Slalom Team.
