Rio – The month of April, which ends this Tuesday (30) and which recorded rain in just four days, was the driest in the last 27 years in the city of Rio. The information was released by Sistema Alerta Rio, which began to measure meteorology in 1997.

High temperatures and low relative humidity were hallmarks in the municipality throughout the month. The survey revealed that the average maximum temperature for the month of April (2014 – 2023) was 31.3°C, while the average maximum temperature for April this year was two degrees higher: 33.5°C. The highest temperature recorded in the municipality was 39.1°C, last Sunday (28).

The System also highlighted the low relative humidity in the capital. In April, three days had humidity levels below 30%: last Tuesday (23), last Wednesday (24) and Sunday (28).

With the humidity level below normal, some people began to experience problems such as red eyes and a feeling of sand, allergies, dry throat and nose, among other problems. The recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) is to take care of hydration.

The chief meteorologist of Sistema Alerta Rio, Raquel Franco, explains what led to this record: “we had the action of a high pressure system, with blocking characteristics mainly at the end of the month. This formed a barrier that stopped the rain from arriving. In other words, the cold fronts that passed through were much more oceanic, causing little rain and for a short time.”

Of the 30 days of the month, rain was recorded on only four. The average volume of rain for the entire month was 117.5 millimeters (mm), however, the Alerta Rio rain gauges recorded only 8.3 mm, that is, it rained 7.1% of the average.

Forecast for early May

According to Alerta Rio, the first days of May are expected to remain dry, hot and without rain in the municipality. This Wednesday (1st) and Thursday (2nd), the forecast indicates that the weather will remain stable, with skies with few clouds and no rain forecast. Winds will be weak to moderate and temperatures will be high, reaching over 38°C.

On Friday (3) there will be a variation in cloud cover in the city, with a predominance of partly cloudy skies. However, there is no rain forecast.

On Saturday (4), the day of Madonna’s concert, in Copacabana, in the South Zone, the sky should become clear again and change to partially cloudy, but, again, without the possibility of rain.
