Paraíba – At least 44 people were injured after the structure of a concert hall collapsed on the night of this Sunday, 28th, in João Pessoa, Paraíba. The party was being held at UP Garden. The event taking place there was “Vibe do Sagaiz”, promoted by bregafunk singer Gustavo Sagaiz.
During the event, the wooden and tile structure where the stage is located collapsed. In videos shared on social media, it is possible to see the despair on the part of the public, with many people lying on the ground and screaming in despair.
Around four rescue units from the Fire Department and seven from the João Pessoa Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu-JP) were called, but this number of vehicles was insufficient to deal with the number of victims. Many of the injured people had to be attended to by family and friends in private cars.
All the injured were taken to the João Pessoa Emergency and Trauma Hospital. The victims are 22 men and 22 women aged between 17 and 46 years old. The injuries are of different levels, some people had fractures throughout the body. As of early this morning, at least 35 people have already been discharged.
According to the health unit’s medical bulletin, at least two people are in serious condition. One victim, aged 20, was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after medical procedures and another, aged 42, remains under observation in the Neurology unit.
On social media, singer Gustavo Sagaiz, promoter of the event, who was performing at the time of the accident, blamed the event house for the accident.
“What fell wasn’t our stage, it was the structure of the house. (…) We have no way of knowing. We hired one of the most expensive venues in João Pessoa. Speechless, my friends are in the hospital”, he lamented Sagaiz. “Now we await investigations by the police and firefighters,” he added.
So far, no one responsible for the space where the event was held has commented.
At the time of the party, it was raining in João Pessoa, and the winds were strong, but it is not yet known whether this affected the structure. The Fire Department went to the scene after the accident and an investigation will be carried out to try to identify the cause of the collapse.
