Eric Rinard, an engineer and University of Colorado Boulder alum, announced he is seeking candidacy in a statewide race for CU regent at-large.
“Eric has volunteered with the Weld County Republican Party and as a board member of Aspen Ridge Preparatory Charter School, and now seeks to take his experience to the CU Board of Regents,” according to a release. “Eric believes strongly in free speech, individual liberty and rational debate — all of which are foundational to western civilization and its equal promise of prosperity to everyone who works to earn it.”
Rinard, a Republican, graduated from Denver Public Schools before earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at CU Boulder. He is a senior engineer at KMLabs, a position he’s held since 2009. Rinard’s career has spanned several small technology companies on the northern Front Range.
He has been the district captain and secretary of the Weld County Republican Party. Rinard also has been a board member at Aspen Ridge Preparatory School, a public charter school in the St. Vrain Valley School District, since 2016.
He has been a Colorado resident since age 2 and a Weld County resident since 2003. Married 22 years, Rinard, his wife and their four kids live on and operate a 30-acre horse farm in Weld County east of Erie, participating in equestrian vaulting as a family.

The University of Colorado Board of Regents, the elected board that oversees the CU system, consists of nine members serving staggered six-year terms, one elected from each of Colorado’s eight congressional districts and one from the state at large. The regent-at-large seat is currently held by Democrat Lesley Smith, whose term is from 2019-2025. Smith will not be running for reelection.
The CU Board of Regents elections will take place in November.
