Fallen officer's missing service weapon recovered, police chief says

CHICAGO — The service weapon taken from a Chicago police officer when he was gunned down earlier this month has been recovered, the city’s police superintendent said Monday.

Supt. Larry Snelling spoke to reporters following fallen officer Luis Huesca’s funeral and as the manhunt for his killer continued.

“The officer’s weapon was recovered,” Snelling said. “That was done through some great, great work by our detectives and by other members of the Chicago Police Department. We’re going to continue to work diligently until we take this individual into custody. And some point we will – we will get justice for this family.”

Huesca was in uniform when he was shot multiple times on the 3100 block of West 56th Street as he returned home from work on April 21. The six-year veteran assigned to the Priority Response Team out of the 5th District was pronounced dead University of Chicago Medical Center, just two days shy of his 31st birthday.

In addition to Huesca’s service weapon, authorities said his police badge and SUV were also taken. The SUV has since been recovered.

Authorities late Friday announced that an arrest warrant had been issued for Xavier L. Tate in connection with Huesca’s slaying. Rewards totaling $100,000 were offered for information that leads to Tate’s arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Area One detectives at 312-747-8380. Anonymous tips can be made online at CPDtip.com.

A GoFundMe account to collect donations to help support Huesca’s mother has been established.
