High school roundup for April 17, 2024: Hempfield’s Riley Miller no-hits North Allegheny

Riley Miller threw a five-inning no-hitter, striking out four and walking one, to lead Hempfield to a 13-0 victory over North Allegheny (3-2, 3-2) in Section 1-6A softball Wednesday.

Emily Griffith went 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs while Audrey Semow and Lauren Howard each doubled for the Spartans (6-1, 5-1).

Armstrong 4, Franklin Regional 3 – Natalie Ziegler hit a walk-off RBI single in the eighth to boost Armstrong (8-1, 4-1) past Franklin Regional (5-6, 2-3) in Section 2-5A. Madison Baker struck out 12 in eight innings while Jessica Pugh and Abigail Bauer each hit a solo homer for the River Hawks. Averi Lamfrom went 2 for 4 with a double for the Panthers.

Beaver 12, Montour 2 – Winning pitcher Jaedyn Brown hit a three-run home run and Sami Springman homered, doubled and knocked in three runs as Beaver (2-6, 1-3) rolled to a Section 3-4A win. Hailey Staub drove in both runs for Montour (2-3, 2-3).

Belle Vernon 16, Ringgold 5 – Taylor Beech singled, homered and drove in four runs and Mia Zubovic had three hits, including a home run, as Belle Vernon (9-2, 4-2) defeated Ringgold (1-6, 1-4) in Section 2-4A. Maddie Grisnik tripled and knocked in three runs and Lily Crawford got the win for the Leopards. Cassidy Kunkel doubled and singled for the Rams.

Burgettstown 19, Fort Cherry 1 – Layla Sherman tripled and drove in two runs, Brooklyn Robinson singled and plated three runs, and Madelina Guiddy got the win for Burgettstown (4-6, 3-3) in Section 3-2A. Kaylee Weinbrenner went 2 for 2 for Fort Cherry (0-7, 0-6).

Carlynton 22, Rochester 7 – Sarah Loney belted a grad slam, Kyla Morris doubled and brought home four runs and Abby Tomaszewski finished with two RBIs as Carlynton (4-3, 3-2) rolled to a Section 1-A win. Emily Weese and Reese Riordan each singled and drove in a run for Rochester (3-3, 2-2). Danica DeCecco got the win for the Cougars.

Elizabeth Forward 15, Laurel Highlands 0 – Shelby Telegdy struck out eight and tossed a three-inning perfect game as Elizabeth Forward (8-0, 6-0) dominated in a Section 2-4A win over Laurel Highlands (1-6, 1-5). Telegdy also hit two home runs and drove in five runs. Julia Resnik also homered and knocked in two runs while Alivia Grimm doubled and brought home three runs for the Warriors.

Hampton 10, Blackhawk 0 – Winning pitcher Marissa Snyder struck out six in five innings and hit a triple while Mackenzie Reese hit a three-run home run as Hampton (6-1, 5-0) shut out Blackhawk (2-3, 1-3) in Section 3-4A. Charlotte Lomb tripled and doubled and Aliza Michielli doubled for the Talbots.

Indiana 9, Highlands 1 – Olivia Zimmerman allowed four hits and struck out 14 in a complete game while Kyle Cass went 2 for 4 with three RBIs as Indiana (6-3, 4-0) bested Highlands (0-7, 0-4) in Section 1-4A. Carrah Scardina went 2 for 3 for the Rams.

Knoch 1, Freeport 0 – Marlee Fraser walked one, allowed two hits and fanned 10 in seven shutout innings for Knoch (7-3) in nonsection play. Lindsay Wise singled and Fraser doubled and drove in a run for the Knights. Sydney Selker struck out five and gave up four hits in six innings for Freeport (4-4).

Laurel 12, New Brighton 0; Laurel 13, New Brighton 0 –Riley Balcolm struck out seven in a four-inning no-hitter as Laurel (6-3, 4-1) beat New Brighton (1-7, 0-5) in the first game of a Section 1-2A doubleheader. Ivy Pancher homered twice and drove in five while Balcolm singled, doubled and had three RBIs for the Spartans. In the second game, Addie Deal struck out seven in four innings while allowing two hits to lead Laurel. Pancher homered, singled and drove in five runs and Autumn Boyd smashed a three-run homer for the Spartans.

Mapletown 3, California 2 – Winning pitcher Devan Clark fanned nine in seven innings while Makenna Lotspeich collected three hits for Mapletown (3-3, 3-1) in a Section 2-A win. Kera Urick went 3 for 3 for California (0-8, 0-6).

McGuffey 5, Seton LaSalle 0 – Julia Barr tripled and drove in a run and Faith Ealy doubled and plated another as McKenna Crothers pitched McGuffey (6-2, 3-1, 2-2) to a Section 4-3A win over Seton LaSalle (2-5, 1-3).

Monessen 9, Bishop Canevin 6 – Winning pitcher Joey Hurst singled, doubled and drove in three runs while striking out 12 to lead Monessen (3-2, 3-1) to a Section 3-A win. Ayvionna Minnie had a double and three RBIs for the Greyhounds. Cameran Lokaitis tripled and knocked in three for Bishop Canevin (0-6, 0-4).

Mt. Pleasant 10, Latrobe 0 – Winning pitcher Gianna Stanek went five innings, allowed one hit and struck out six while doubling and driving in a pair as Mt. Pleasant (4-4, 1-2) beat Latrobe (5-5, 4-1) in nonsection play. Gianna Lewis singled for the Wildcats.

Norwin 8, Canon-McMillan 5 – Isabella Deering hit a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth to lift Norwin (4-6, 3-5) past Canon-McMillan (3-3, 3-3) in Section 1-6A. Josey Michalski tripled while Addison Grimes and Diem Wardzinski each doubled for the Knights. Skylah Steban and Kiersten Williams each hit a solo homer for the Big Macs.

OLSH 12, Beth-Center 2 – Leann Walzer doubled and drove in three runs, Julia Pinter doubled and plated two and winning pitcher Lilli Wamsley doubled for OLSH (7-2, 5-0) in a Section 3-2A over Beth-Center (2-1, 2-1).

Penn Hills 12, Oakland Catholic 2 – Isabella DeCarlo struck out eight in six innings and Hannah Pugliese and Brooklyn Best each doubled and drove in two runs as Penn Hills (3-3, 1-3) beat Oakland Catholic (1-6, 0-5) in Section 1-5A. Madison Pullen hit a two-run home run for the Eagles.

Pine-Richland 13, Butler 3 – Jocelyn Langer went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, Calle Henne collected two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs and Iliana Aggelou homered and drove in a pair of runs to power Pine-Richland (6-4, 5-2) to a Section 1-6A win. Kelsey Ogin homered and knocked in two runs and Kaela Malis smashed a solo homer for Butler (2-5, 1-5).

Quaker Valley 9, Beaver Falls 3 – Winning pitcher Olivia Hoose struck out 11 and smacked an RBI double to lead Quaker Valley (3-4, 1-3) to a Section 2-3A win. Grace Carver tripled and drove in three runs for the Quakers. Cali Legzdin went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs for Beaver Falls (2-5, 1-4).

Riverside 13, Freedom 3 – Gracelyn Maltarski went 2 for 3 with a home run and Charlie Bissell went 2 for 2 with four RBIs for Riverside (3-3, 3-2) in a Section 1-2A win over Freedom (0-5, 0-4). Ayla Sterner got the win for the Panthers.

Shenango 15, Aliquippa 0; Shenango 17, Aliquippa 0 – Kennedi Lynn tossed a three-inning perfect game and struck out nine to lead Shenango (5-4, 5-1) in the first game of a Section 1-2A doubleheader sweep of Aliquippa (1-3, 0-3). Emma Herb tripled and knocked in two runs and Brianna Alusia went 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs for the Wildcats. In the second game, Alusia tossed a three-inning no-hitter and fanned eight while hitting a double and triple to lead Shenango. Lynn doubled and drove in three and Herb hit a solo home run for the Wildcats.

Southmoreland 15, South Allegheny 0 – Amarah McCutcheon set a school record by belting three home runs, driving in six, as Southmoreland (9-0, 4-0) shut out South Allegheny (3-5, 1-3) in Section 3-3A. and drove in six runs, Gwen Basinger went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, Makayla Etling homered, singled and knocked in a pair of runs, and Taylor Doppleheuer hit a solo home run. As a team, the Scotties broke the school record for home runs in a game with seven. Morgan Mosqueda doubled for the Gladiators.

Steel Valley 8, Apollo-Ridge 6 – Darwin Burns doubled and drove in a pair while winning pitcher Aubrey Guciardo hit three doubles and drove in a run as Steel Valley (4-5, 3-2) beat Apollo-Ridge (2-4, 2-2) in Section 2-2A. Arianna Hughley hit an RBI double and Jocelyn Snyder struck out 11 and also doubled in a run for the Vikings.

Trinity 14, Thomas Jefferson 6 – Remmie Seitz homered twice and drove in five runs, Hanna Suhoski slugged a three-run home run and Emily Hasson homered and drove in three as Trinity (7-2, 3-1) prevailed in a Section 4-5A contest. Morgan Alisesky homered for Thomas Jefferson (5-4, 3-2). Finley Hohn got the win for the Hillers.

Union 15, Northgate 0 – Irelyn Fisher homered twice and finished with five RBIs and Olivia Benedict singled and slugged a home run, driving in four runs, as Union (9-1, 7-0) shut out Northgate (0-5, 0-3) in Section 1-A. Piper Jendrysik allowed just two hits in a win for the Scotties.

Uniontown 12, Albert Gallatin 1 – Nelle Budinsky went 3 for 3 with a double and five RBIs, Delaney Absell doubled twice, and Ava Livingood doubled for Uniontown (5-1, 5-0) in a Section 2-4A win. Ashley Metts doubled for Albert Gallatin (1-5, 1-4). Emmaleigh Noah got the win for the Red Raiders.

West Allegheny 13, Moon 3 – Savanna Benish went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, Aubrey Police tripled, doubled and knocked in two runs, and winning pitcher Cali Fiscus doubled twice and had a pair of RBIs for West Allegheny (10-1, 4-0) in a Section 3-5A victory. Kendall Chambers went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs for Moon (1-7, 1-3).

West Greene 15, Avella 0 – Winning pitcher Payton Gilbert homered, doubled and knocked in five runs and Ali Goodwin singled and drove in three runs as West Greene (4-3, 3-1) defeated Avella (3-5, 0-4) in Section 2-A.

Yough 14, Derry 3 – Winning pitcher Kylee Fisher went 4 for 5 with a double and six RBIs and Payton Jenkins doubled and knocked in two runs to lead Yough (4-1, 3-1) to a Section 3-3A victory. Haylee Myers went 2 for 2 with a solo home run for Derry (2-7, 0-4).

Baseball

Albert Gallatin 5, Uniontown 3 – Evan Weakland doubled, had an RBI and was the winning pitcher for Albert Gallatin (3-7, 3-2) in a Section 2-4A win. Gary Smitley III had an RBI single for Uniontown (3-5, 2-3).

Ambridge 5, Blackhawk 0 – Grant Uvodich drove in two runs and Adam Fernandez knocked in another to give winning pitcher Joey Pugh run support as Ambridge (2-6, 1-5) blanked Blackhawk (2-4, 2-3) in Section 1-4A. Owen Keister took the loss for the Cougars.

Bishop Canevin 14, Monessen 1 – Jackson Maddix pitched a five-inning no-hitter with 13 strikeouts to lead Bishop Canevin (5-2, 5-2) past Monessen (0-8, 0-5) in Section 3-A. Quentin White had a pair of hits and four RBIs for the Crusaders.

Chartiers-Houston 14, Burgettstown 4 – Nico Filosi singled and drove in three runs and Nathan Christy doubled and knocked in a pair as Chartiers-Houston (5-3, 5-0) defeated Burgettstown (3-3-1, 3-1) in Section 1-2A. Brodie Kuzior went 2 for 3 with a solo home run for the Blue Devils.

Latrobe 16, Laurel Highlands 2 – Jacob Cramer went 2 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs, Mason Leonard went 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles and six RBIs, and Dominick Cararini pitched Latrobe (9-1, 6-0) to a Section 2-4A win. Noah Lion clubbed a solo homer for Laurel Highlands (0-9, 0-6).

Pine-Richland 13, Allderdice 2 – Ben Husted went 2 for 2 with a triple and five RBIs for Pine-Richland (10-2, 6-1) in a Section 1-6A victory over Allderdice (1-8, 0-7). Peyton Ford doubled, scored two runs and had a pair of RBIs for the Rams. Noah Mackie pitched five innings with eight strikeouts.

Riverside 16, Beaver Falls 0 – Hunter Garvin homered and drove in three runs to pace Riverside (6-0, 5-0) in a Section 1-3A win over Beaver Falls (0-7, 0-7). Ashton Schlosser doubled and drove in two for the Panthers.

Thomas Jefferson 14, McKeesport 2 – Noah Kaszer, Brady Hodge and Alec Warden had two hits each to help Thomas Jefferson (12-0, 6-0) secure a Section 3-4A win. Kaszer doubled twice and Hodge was the winning pitcher. Matt Miller had a pair of singles and RBIs for McKeesport (0-9, 0-6).

Yough 14, Southmoreland 3 – Landon O’Donnell went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts for Yough (4-5, 4-2) in a Section 4-3A win. Zander Aird singled, doubled and drove in two for the Cougars. Cole Teets doubled for Southmoreland (2-6, 2-4).

Boys tennis

Section 2-3A – The fourth seed beat the 10th seed in an all-North Allegheny section doubles final in an unpredictable bracket. The Tigers’ Srivatsav Thirumala and Shivum Telang beat Adithya Ramadas Guptha and Adhav Ramadas, 6-2, 6-3, for the title. Butler’s Andrew Bocci and Benjamin Busler topped Pine-Richland’s Ian Hurt and Udi Akolkarfor third place, 6-3, 6-3. In Class 3A, the top four finishers advance to the WPIAL tournament.

Section 3-3A – In a battle between Fox Chapel doubles teams, top-seeded Travis Malone and Ben Hallman defeated No. 3 Mason Friday and Ezra Shensa, 6-4, 6-0, for the section title. In a matchup of Shady Side Academy teams, Sai Chaudhry and Robert Bartolacci beat Chase Hartman and Robert Brunins for third place, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (2).

Section 4-3A – In a section where the seeds mostly held, No. 1 Ronan Gibbons and Ari Plutko of Upper St. Clair defeated No. 2 Paul Gorun and Luca Ritivoi of Mt. Lebanon, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, in a three-set final. No. 4 Devin Collier and Hersh Kambli of Bethel Park beat No. 3 Avi Sharma and Kritin Sharma of Peters Township, 6-3, 6-2, for third place.

Section 1-2A – Valley’s Landon Harcledode won his second WPIAL Section 1-2A title of the season as he teamed up with Tyler Quinn to take doubles honors. Harclerode and Quinn defeated third-seeded Gabe Nettleton and Noah Weigner of Indiana in a three-set final, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. Mt. Pleasant’s Aydan Gross and Eli Duvall topped Greensburg Salem’s Silas Morris and Tommy Shrum, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, in the third-place match. In Class 2A, the top three finishers advance to the WPIAL tournament.

Section 3-2A – In a matchup between North Catholic teams, top-seeded Wills Kontul and Justin Kontul beat No. 3 Alex Foubert-Lopez and Alex Weber, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3, in the finals. Hampton’s Hayden List and Ben LaRusse got past Burrell’s David Frederick and Cam Wagner, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1, in the third-place match.

Section 4-2A – In an all-Sewickley Academy final, second-seeded Max Kopf and Ben Terrell knocked off No. 1 Jackson Quigley and Tejas Mitra, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Blackhawk’s Aiden Terry and Ben Crefeld defeated Central valley’s Nate Lion and Donovan Matsook for third, 6-1, 6-2.

Section 5-2A – Top-seeded John Rohrkaste and Jonah Carmadese of Montour defeated No. 3 Grant Webb and Matteo Castellini of Quaker Valley, 7-6 (4), 6-3, in the section finals. Quaker Valley’s Will Watson and Brahm Gianiodis outlasted second-seeded Chris Zhu and Nikou Nourbakhsh of Winchester Thurston for third, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
