High school roundup for April 19, 2024: Plum deals 1st loss to North Allegheny

Winning pitcher Colin Watson struck out 10 as Plum defeated North Allegheny 4-1 in a nonsection baseball game Friday, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season.

Jack Anderson doubled and drove in a run and Erik Streussing went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Mustangs (7-4). David Posey singled and drove in a run for the Tigers (9-1). Dom Beyer and Max Vollmer each drove in a run for Plum.

Armstrong 10, Elizabeth Forward 1 – Brayden Wright went 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs and Rory Pschirer went 3 for 3 with a double to lead Armstrong (5-5) to a nonsection victory. Kaden Faychak collected two base hits for Elizabeth Forward (5-5). Carson DeLano doubled and Jacob Bowser got the win for the River Hawks.

Avella 19, Mapletown 3 – Cameron Ullom went 3 for 3 with five RBIs, Isaiah Bradick knocked in two runs and winning pitcher Bryce Wright doubled as Avella (7-1, 6-1) beat Mapletown (2-7, 0-5) in Section 1-A. Joshua Mick went 2 for 3 for the Maples.

Belle Vernon 5, Ringgold 2 – Cole Matusik drove in two runs, Adam LaCarte doubled and Lucas Judy pitched Belle Vernon (8-2, 5-1) to a Section 2-4A win over Ringgold (3-7, 1-5).

Bethel Park 5, Indiana 4 – Ethan Stanhoff doubled and Dylan Paul pitched Bethel Park (6-4-1) to a nonsection win. Ben Ryan hit a two-run homer and Andrew McGee went 3 for 3 with a double for Indiana (7-3).

Burrell 13, Apollo-Ridge 3 – Isaac Lacinski tripled and drove in three runs, Brayden Mell knocked in three as well and Ryan Bates doubled and drove in a run to lead Burrell (5-5) to a nonsection win. Parker Gourley went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Apollo-Ridge (0-9). Nolan Brouwer got the win for the Bucs.

Central Valley 11, New Castle 1 – Will Ciucci allowed two hits and struck out six in five innings as Central Valley (6-4) beat New Castle (0-12) in nonsection play. Jadon Balewski went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Ciucci drove in three for the Warriors. Phillip Laurenza had a pair of singles for the Hurricanes.

Chartiers Valley 10, Woodland Hills 0 – Ethan Ridgeway struck out 13 in a five-inning no-hitter for Chartiers Valley (6-2, 4-2) in a Section 3-4A victory over Woodland Hills (0-8, 0-6). Michael Switala collected two hits and two RBIs and Colton Koza doubled and drove in a run for the Colts.

Ellwood City 5, Quaker Valley 0 – Will Nardone struck out five in a complete-game shutout as Ellwood City (4-6, 2-6) topped Quaker Valley (3-7, 2-6) in Section 1-3A. Sam Landis doubled in two runs and Ryan Widmaier went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Wolverines. Nolan Wagoner had a pair of base knocks for the Quakers.

Fort Cherry 9, Carmichaels 5 – Ryan Huey went 4 for 4 with a home run, a double and five RBIs and Matt Sieg was 3 for 4 with a home run and drove in a pair for Fort Cherry (7-1, 5-1) in a Section 1-A win. Aydan Adamson homered and doubled for Carmichaels (6-2, 4-2). Blake Swedler got the win for the Rangers.

Fox Chapel 2, Kiski Area 1 – Joe Geller doubled twice and knocked in a run and Ben DeMotte singled and drove in a run to lift Fox Chapel (8-3) past Kiski Area (6-5) in nonsection play. Franco Pistella got the win and Christian Wilkinson picked up the save for the Foxes. Blake Fritz hit an RBI single for the Cavaliers.

Freedom 11, South Side 8 – Garrett Drutarosky went 2 for 4 and knocked in four runs while Tommy Ward and Chase Grable each drove in a pair as Freedom (7-3, 5-1) bested South Side (4-5, 3-5) in Section 2-2A. Carter Wilson doubled and drove in three for the Rams. Xavier Robbins picked up the win for the Bulldogs.

Jefferson-Morgan 1, California 0 – Brenton Barnhart singled and scored on an error in the top of the ninth as Jefferson-Morgan (3-6, 1-6) prevailed over California (2-8, 2-5) in Section 1-A. John Woodward struck out 13 in six shutout innings for the Rockets. Caden Monticelli fanned 10 in seven shutout frames for the Trojans. Brock Bayles got the win for Jefferson-Morgan.

Karns City 3, Freeport 2 – Colton Christie hit a game-winning single in the top of the ninth to secure a nonsection win for Karns City. Jacob Jones smacked an RBI double for the Gremlins. Ryan Claypool drove in a run while C.J. Walker and Luke Whitfield each doubled for Freeport (3-7).

Laurel 12, Northgate 0 – Luca Santini struck out 11 in a four-inning shutout for Laurel (4-4, 3-4) in a Section 2-2A win. Santini also doubled and drove in three runs while Hunter Kobialka and Tyler Shearer each knocked in a pair of runs for the Spartans. Anthony Barron went 2 for 3 for Northgate (0-8, 0-5).

Penn-Trafford 8, Trinity 6 – Down by two in the top of the seventh, Ian Temple hit an RBI double to tie the game, Ethan Septak singled to give Penn-Trafford (9-1, 6-1) the lead, and Brody Hoffman drove in two insurance runs with a double as the Warriors edged out Trinity (4-5, 3-4) in nonsection play. Gibson Havanis and Cole Carl each drove in two runs for the Hillers. Hoffman finished with five RBIs for the Warriors.

Pine-Richland 6, Allderdice 1 – Anthony Mengine doubled and knocked in three runs, Gavin Stugart doubled and drove in a run and Chase Caricato got the win for Pine-Richland (12-2, 8-1) in Section 1-6A. Landon Blank and Gil Nadav each doubled for Allderdice (1-10, 0-9).

Seneca Valley 13, South Fayette 2 – Miles Bowman and Ryan Piekutoski doubled and Nick Parrotto earned the win on the mound as Seneca Valley (6-4-1) beat South Fayette (5-3) in nonsection play. Gino Satira smacked a double for the Lions.

South Allegheny 11, South Park 7 – Jaxson Champ went 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs and Trenton Popovich was 2 for 4 with a homer and drove in four runs to lead South Allegheny (10-2, 5-1) to a Section 2-3A. Cooper Hochendoner and Zach Ludwig each hit a home run for South Park (5-5, 3-3). Hunter Fulmer got the win for the Gladiators.

Springdale 5, St. Joseph 3 – In Section 2-A, Springdale (4-2, 4-1) was boosted by Joey Loebig, who went 4 for 4 with three RBIs, in a win over St. Joseph (1-8, 1-5). Andrew Redman went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Noah Robbins got the win for the Dynamos. Charlie Ross and Eliiott Szalla each went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Spartans.

Union 4, Leechburg 3; Union 4, Leechburg 3 — Union (5-0, 4-0) swept a pair of games from Leechburg (4-6, 3-4) in Section 2-A by the same score. In the first game, Dayne Johnke singled in a run, Mike Gunn doubled and Jalen Peace struck out eight in seven innings for the Scotties. Rocco Vigna went 3 for 4 with an RBI for the Blue Devils. In the second game, Johnke hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh, and winning pitcher Anthony Roper went 2 for 4 for Union. Vigna drove in two runs for Leechburg.

Valley 5, Riverview 0 – Wesley Shrock went 1 for 2 with a three-run home run and finished with four RBIs and Mason Simmons was 2 for 3 with an RBI as Valley (6-4) shut out Riverview (6-3) in nonsection play. Rex Roberts singled for the Raiders. Nikolas Heakins got the win for the Vikings.

Waynesburg 12, Greensburg Salem 9 – Grant Pack drove in three runs, Ethan Kiger brought home two, and Alex Vansickle and Trenton Zupper each doubled and knocked in a run as Waynesburg (7-0, 6-0) defeated Greensburg Salem (4-5, 4-4) in Section 4-3A. Braedon Leatherman doubled and had two RBIs for the Lions.

Softball

Apollo-Ridge 17, Steel Valley 11 – Jaden Mull went 3 for 5 with a triple and three RBIs and MaKenna Syster went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs to power Apollo-Ridge (3-4, 3-2) in Section 2-2A. Malea Veneziani was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs and Camdyn Kowalczyk singled and tripled for the Vikings. Aubrey Guciardo doubled for Steel Valley (4-6, 3-3).

Avonworth 17, Valley 0 – Alivia Lantzy threw a three-inning no-hitter and went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead Avonworth (5-3, 3-1) to a Section 1-3A win over Valley (0-10, 0-5). Abigail Brooks and Rylee Gray each homered and Emma Obersteiner tripled for the Antelopes.

Baldwin 5, Pine-Richland 3 – Jordan Gerendash and Keira Platz hit a home run apiece and Anna Schumacher doubled to lead Baldwin (3-6, 2-5) to a Section 1-6A win. Calle Henne hit a double and home run and Iliana Aggelou doubled for Pine-Richland (6-5, 5-3).

Bentworth 7, OLSH 0 – Sydney Gonglik threw a no-hitter and struck out 17 to lead Bentworth (8-2, 6-0) to a Section 3-2A win over OLSH (7-3, 5-1). Zoie McDonald tripled and Nora Lindley, Sofia Gaussa and Willow Eckles each doubled for the Bearcats.

Beth-Center 11, Fort Cherry 1 – Kendall Welsh threw a six-inning, three-hit shutout and struck out nine for Beth-Center (3-2, 3-2) in a Section 3-2A win. Amelia Michelucci hit two singles for Fort Cherry (0-9, 0-8). Keira Lampa tripled and Bella Stepp doubled for the Bulldogs.

Bethel Park 6, Upper St. Clair 2 – Sia Spano hit two singles and Makenzie Wade singled and drove in a run for Bethel Park (5-6, 3-3) in a Section 4-5A win. Rachel Scharrer hit a triple for Upper St. Clair (3-7, 1-4).

Bishop Canevin 16, St. Joseph 1 – Amari Elliott threw a three-inning no-hitter and hit an RBI double for Bishop Canevin (1-6, 1-4) in a Section 3-A win over St. Joseph (1-3, 1-3). Bella Lane tripled, Myra Gohring and Lia Pilarski doubled and Talia Williams drove in three runs for the Crusaders.

Burrell 13, Shady Side Academy 3 – Sophia Gregg hit a double and triple, Shelby Novak doubled and Braelyn Jones, Haylee Heasley and Sabrina Hoover drove in two runs apiece to lead Burrell (7-3, 5-1) to a Section 1-3A win. Jazmine Johnson tripled for Shady Side Academy (1-4, 1-4).

Chartiers-Houston 6, Carmichaels 5 – Meadow Ferri hit two doubles, Seanna Riggle tripled and Ella Richey and Lauren Rush hit a double apiece to lead Chartiers-Houston (7-1, 5-0) to a Section 2-A win. Kaitlyn Waggett hit two doubles and Ali Jacobs and Megan Voithofer each doubled for Carmichaels (6-2, 3-1).

Chartiers Valley 7, Blackhawk 5 – Delaney O’Connor, Marta Gualazzi, Lily Duffill and Kaitlyn Truong hit a home run apiece to lead Chartiers Valley (6-2, 4-1) past Blackhawk (2-4, 1-4) in a Section 3-4A win.

Ellwood City 7, Hopewell 6 – Riley Prestopine hit a home run, Keira Rozanski and Sara Schwarz each doubled and Julia Nardone went 4 for 4 to lead Ellwood City (9-1, 5-1) to a Section 2-3A win. Chloe Nale, Kara Barkovich and Tallulah Showrank each hit a home run for Hopewell (4-7, 1-4).

Elizabeth Forward 15, Greensburg Salem 0 – Berlyn Holibaugh went 3 for 3 with a double, triple and three RBIs to lead Elizabeth Forward (9-0, 7-0) to a three-inning win over Greensburg Salem (3-8, 1-5). Aubri Cimba went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, Julia Resnik tripled and drove in two runs, and Carlee Soukup also had three hits for the Warriors.

Franklin Regional 20, Kiski Area 0 – Toryn Fulton went 3 for 3 with a double, triple, home run and eight RBIs to lead Franklin Regional (6-6, 3-3) to a five-inning win over Kiski Area (0-9, 0-5) in Section 2-5A. Adrianna Martz went 2 for 2 with a triple and five RBIs and Chloe Lancaster earned the win for the Panthers.

Freedom 13, New Brighton 2 – Shaye Bailey went 3 for 3 with a double and triple and Hayden Baucan tripled for Freedom (1-5, 1-4) in a Section 1-2A win. Alexis Wall doubled for New Brighton (1-9, 0-7).

Greensburg Central Catholic 16, Ellis School 0; Greensburg Central Catholic 22, Ellis School 1 — Greensburg Central Catholic (4-2, 4-2) swept a doubleheader from Ellis School (0-5, 0-5) in Section 2-2A. In the first game, Julianna Saxion threw a three-inning no-hitter, and Madison Keller doubled for the Centurions. In the second, Grace Kindel went 4 for 4 with a double, home run and five RBIs, Abigail Dei hit a double and triple and Makenzee Kenney homered for GCC. Nanlyn Henderson hit two singles for Ellis.

Hampton 13, Beaver 0 – Marissa Snyder threw a one-hit shutout and Mackenzie Reese had a single, home run and six RBIs to lead Hampton (7-1, 6-0) to a Section 3-4A win. Sami Springman singled for Beaver (2-7, 1-4).

Hempfield 11, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Riley Miller threw a five-inning no-hitter and struck out 10 for Hempfield (8-1, 7-1) in a Section 1-6A win over Mt. Lebanon (1-10, 1-8). Peyton Heisler homered, Ella Berkebile doubled and Emily Griffith had three singles and three RBIs for the Spartans.

Indiana 4, West Mifflin 2 – Olivia Zimmerman struck out 16 and went 4 for 5 with a home run and Maggie Cunningham hit two doubles to lead Indiana (7-3, 5-0) to a Section 1-4A win. Adilee Salopek homered for West Mifflin (6-5, 3-3).

Jeannette 7, Monessen 0; Jeannette 2, Monessen 1 — Jeannette (6-0, 5-0) swept a Section 3-A doubleheader from Monessen (3-4, 3-3). In the first game, Grace Stein threw a one-hit shutout, struck out 11 and had a double and three RBIs. Abigail Shaw tripled, and Mackenzie Lewis doubled for the Jayhawks. Kendra Jones tripled for Monessen (3-4, 3-3). In the second game, Stein struck out 11, and Abigail Shaw hit two doubles to lead Jeannette. Bry’Aunna Cook doubled for Monessen.

Knoch 7, McKeesport 5 – Brynne Smith doubled twice and Carissa Tekely and Lizzie Danik each had a single, double and two RBIs to lead Knoch (8-3, 5-1) to a Section 1-4A win. Winning pitcher Marlee Fraser struck out 10. Madison Miller went 4 for 4 with a double and home run and Kendal Bercik singled and doubled for McKeesport (6-5, 2-4).

Latrobe 16, Gateway 0 – Kayla Williams threw a three-inning perfect game with eight strikeouts to lead Latrobe (6-5, 5-1) past Gateway (0-8, 0-5) in Section 2-5A. Sami Kronewetter singled, doubled and drove in four runs and Macie McHugh and Miley Williams also singled and doubled for the Wildcats.

Laurel Highlands 6, Belle Vernon 2 – Aubrey Speelman hit a home run for Laurel Highlands (2-6, 2-5) in a Section 2-4A win. Katie Sokol went 4 for 4 with a double for Belle Vernon (10-3, 5-3).

Ligonier Valley 1, Southmoreland 0 – Cheyenne Piper threw a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and Abbey Springer doubled and scored on a Sydnee Foust groundout in the first inning as Ligonier Valley (7-1, 4-1) defeated Southmoreland (9-2, 4-2) in Section 3-3A on back-to-back days. Maddie Brown allowed two hits for the Scotties.

Mapletown 8, Avella 0 – Devan Clark threw a two-hit shutout, struck out 14 and hit a triple to lead Mapletown (4-4, 4-2) to a Section 2-A win. Avery Rado hit a double for Avella (3-7, 0-6). Makenna Lotspeich hit three doubles and Cora Roberts tripled for the Maples.

Mars 11, Western Beaver 4 – Abby Robinson hit a home run, Laura Craska tripled and Allie Walukiewicz doubled to lead Mars (4-7, 3-2) to a Section 3-5A win. Abby Tomkowski hit a triple and Izzie Lefebvre hit a double for Western Beaver (3-4, 2-4).

Mohawk 8, Central Valley 0 – Aricka Youngo hit a double and triple and Addy Moskal, Alivia Hare and Mylie Pistorius each doubled for Mohawk (8-1, 4-0) in a Section 2-3A win over Central Valley (5-2, 3-2).

Montour 17, Ambridge 5 – Danielle Terpack, Giacinta Labrie, Hailey Staub, Jana Hess, Jade Schrenker and Shania Cope each hit a double for Montour (3-4, 3-4) in a Section 3-4A win. Abby Reeves went 3 for 3 for Ambridge (0-6, 0-3).

Neshannock 5, Laurel 1 – Addy Frye struck out 10 and hit a double and home run and Gabby Perod tripled to lead Neshannock (8-0, 6-0) to a Section 1-2A win. Lexi Brua homered and Autumn Boyd struck out 10 for Laurel (6-4, 4-2).

North Hills 18, Plum 8 – Savannah Bodnar hit a double and home run and Abigail Sutton and Lily Adamski each doubled for North Hills (8-2, 5-1) in a Section 1-5A win. Jaiden Gentile tripled and Bella Tavella, Danielle Pici and Riley Stephans each doubled for Plum (6-4, 3-3).

Norwin 10, Butler 1 – Josey Michalski had two doubles and three RBIs, Bailey Snowberger tripled and Lily Holtzman doubled to lead Norwin (6-6, 5-5) past Butler (2-7, 1-7) in a Section 1-6A win.

Quaker Valley 12, Beaver Falls 9 – Olivia Hoose struck out 17, Gemma Wiegand hit a triple and home run and Isabella Jarrett and Leah Weisser each tripled to lead Quaker Valley (4-5, 2-4) to a Section 2-3A win. Zhekiyah Reddick hit a double and home run and Cali Legzdin hit a two-run homer for Beaver Falls (2-6, 1-5).

Ringgold 6, Albert Gallatin 5 – Daniella Vecchio hit three singles and Jules Campa drove in three runs to lead Ringgold (2-7, 2-5) to a Section 2-4A win. Mia Myers hit a home run for Albert Gallatin (1-7, 1-6).

Riverside 16, Aliquippa 0 – Ayla Sterner threw a three-inning no-hitter, struck out eight and hit a double, Mia Williams hit a triple and Charlie Bissell hit a double for Riverside (5-4, 5-3) in a Section 1-2A win over Aliquippa (1-6, 0-6).

Riverside 16, Aliquippa 0 – Carlee Crawford went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs, Emma Stockton hit a triple and Saeryn Hoover tripled for Riverside (5-4, 5-3) in a Section 1-2A win. Trienty Arrington singled for Aliquippa (1-6, 0-6).

Seneca Valley 10, North Allegheny 0 – Kara Pasquale hit two doubles and Abby Kalkowski, Anna Kalkowski and Kylie Staudt each doubled for Seneca Valley (11-0, 8-0) in a Section 1-6A win over North Allegheny (4-3, 4-3). Lexie Hames threw four perfect innings with nine strikeouts for the Raiders.

Serra Catholic 8, Brentwood 0 – Kelly Morrison threw a two-hit shutout and struck out 12 and Bailee Dayton and Johanna Domek each doubled for Serra Catholic (6-1, 5-0) in a Section 2-2A win. Mia March doubled and Paige Boehm tripled for Brentwood (2-5, 1-4).

Shaler 4, Fox Chapel 1 – Jayla Antomachi went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs and Taylor London hit two singles to lead Shaler (9-0, 6-0) to a Section 1-5A win. Jillian Haigh hit a double for Fox Chapel (3-6, 2-4).

South Allegheny 11, Mt. Pleasant 4 – Morgan Mosqueda went 4 for 4 with a double, home run and four RBIs to lead South Allegheny (4-5, 2-3) to a Section 3-3A win. Cadence McBride singled and doubled and Cameran Colecchi doubled and drove in a pair for the Gladiators. Mayson Hart went 2 for 3 with a home run and Dani Trainer had three hits, including a double, for Mt. Pleasant (5-5, 1-3).

South Fayette 15, New Castle 4 – Cam Valentino went 4 for 5 with a double, triple and four RBIs and Julia Munkittrick and Liv Bonacci each tripled to lead South Fayette (6-2, 4-2) to a Section 3-5A win. Olivia Hood hit a triple for New Castle (2-6, 1-5). Winning pitcher Emma Earley struck out 10 for the Lions.

Thomas Jefferson 10, Peters Township 3 – Taylor Karpac hit two doubles and Ella Gruber doubled for Thomas Jefferson (6-4, 4-2) in a Section 4-5A win. Kylar Lemansky went 2 for 2 with a double for Peters Township (4-7, 1-4).

Trinity 4, Connellsville 1 – Finley Hohn hit a double for Trinity (8-3, 4-2) in a Section 4-5A win. Jaylee Moorhead hit two singles for Connellsville (8-4, 4-2).

Union 15, Carlynton 0 – Mia Preuhs threw a five-inning no-hitter, struck out 14 and went 3 for 3 with a home run for Union (10-1, 8-0) in a Section 1-A win over Carlynton (4-5, 3-4). Addie Nogay hit a double and triple, Bella Cameron hit two doubles and Madelynn Settle and Tori may each doubled for the Scotties.

Waynesburg 7, Brownsville 1 – Gina Tedrow struck out nine, Dani Stockdale went 3 for 4 and Aidan Snider had two RBIs to lead Waynesburg (5-6, 3-2) past Brownsville (3-5, 2-3) to a Section 4-3A win.

West Allegheny 12, Moon 1 – Ava Henke went 4 for 4 with two doubles and Aubrey Police, Averi Zdinak and Cali Fiscus each doubled for West Allegheny (12-1, 6-0) in a Section 3-5A win. Kendall Chambers went 2 for 2 with a double for Moon (1-8, 1-4).

Yough 5, Derry 0 – Kylee Fisher threw a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and helped her cause with a single, double and two RBIs for Yough (5-1, 4-1) in Section 3-3A. Kaylin Ritenour doubled and drove in a run for the Cougars. Sophia Doherty had a hit for Derry (2-8, 0-5).

Girls lacrosse

Moon 14, North Catholic 1 – Avery Machusko and Reese Keslar scored five goals each, Seanna Rodriguez added two goals and Allie Lerch made nine saves to lead Moon to a Section 2-2A win.

Norwin 14, North Hills 5 – Gia Fernandez scored four goals and Ava Wilson and Alaina Samek added three each to lead Norwin to a nonsection win. Ava Kessler, Karlie Johnson, Maeve Schmook and Lindsay Comito also scored for the Knights.

Boys volleyball

Norwin 3, Moon 0 – Jackson Genicola and Nick Puskaric each had seven kills and Ben Tygielski recorded three blocks as Norwin won a nonsection match. Game scores were 25-13, 25-17, 25-17.
