How much energy was needed to avoid the blackout? – The financial

Last Wednesday, May 8, The National Electrical System suffered a second day of failures due to the second heat wave that occurs in Mexico, a situation that caused blackouts in different states of the country.

This occurred because the intense heat wave has promoted a considerable increase in electricity demand in the country, since many homes use the air conditionersreaching a level of almost 48,500 megawatts, as reported by the National Energy Control Center (Cenace).

And then how much energy was missing?

For his part, the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador indicated that energy demand exceeded the consumption limit per thousand megawattsa situation that caused blackouts to occur in different entities of the country.

“It is being controlled, on Tuesday it was surprising that demand was higher than the capacity that was being generated, because it was affected more. But yesterday we were even on the verge of releasing it, without a problem, there was also more increase in temperature and more demand, more than a thousand megawatts on Tuesday and yesterday a thousand more,” he said on the morning of May 9.

Fortunately, the blackout that occurred on Wednesday, May 8, only affected “three or four states and it lasted for half an hour.”

The president indicated that the authorities of the Cenace already They are working to regulate the energy supply in the country, since this will prevent new blackouts from occurring and prevent further damage.

“What is being done with Cenace is to control so that it is regulated and prevents blackouts from becoming widespread. “We are making enough progress so that the entire system can start generating energy,” he added.

López Obrador indicated that blackouts will be a “temporary issue”because his commitment will be to regularize the energy system throughout the country before the end of his mandate.

“Before, even the Commission only generated 38 percent, now with the effort we are making it already generates about 50 (percent) and at the end of our government it will generate 62 percent, this will give more guarantee,” mentioned.

“And if we now have this generation deficit it is because we are about to finish, some combined cycle plants were delayed,” he concluded.
