Hello girls!

Recently, actress Samara Felippo made public a case of racism involving her 14-year-old daughter, Alicia. According to reports, two classmates had written racist insults in the teenager’s notebook and even ripped out pages. This episode highlights a crucial question: how should parents deal with these situations? What measures should they take? According to family lawyer Barbara Heliodora, conversation is essential.

“Conversing with children about the anti-racist fight is extremely important to promote awareness from an early age about racial equality and combat prejudice. This conversation contributes to the formation of more conscious and empathetic citizens, capable of recognizing and repudiating discriminatory attitudes”, explains Barbara Heliodora. Furthermore, dialogue can begin from childhood, adapting to the child’s ability to understand and mature.

“It is essential to gradually introduce the topic, using accessible and age-appropriate language, encouraging open and welcoming dialogue”, adds the lawyer. When approaching the topic of anti-racism with children, it is important to adopt an empathetic and educational approach. “We must provide clear examples of situations of racial discrimination, explaining why they are unfair and how we can act to promote equality and mutual respect. It is essential to emphasize the importance of diversity and valuing differences,” she says.

And if a child is a victim of racism, according to Barbara Heliodora, it is crucial to act quickly and effectively. “Firstly, it is important to welcome the child, offer emotional support and validate their feelings. Then, it is essential to document what happened and seek legal guidance to evaluate the appropriate legal measures,” she says. According to the Child and Adolescent Statute, any form of discrimination must be reported to the competent authorities, with a view to holding the aggressor accountable, whether at the child and adolescent level, criminal or civil, ensuring the protection and safety of the child. .

“Furthermore, it is essential to promote awareness about the impact of racism on society and work to prevent future occurrences. The phrase I like to apply most is that no child is really born racist, this is constructed or shaped even by negligence in setting limits when raising children, this is also a form of abuse” concludes the family lawyer.
