Longmont looks for lifeguards to watch summer swimmers

As Longmont prepares to open its seasonal pools, swim beach and splash pads for the summer, it’s also looking to add lifeguards to its roster.

“We are still actively hiring lifeguards,” Sara Taylor, Longmont recreation area supervisor for aquatics, said Thursday.

The city is hoping to have between 120 and 125 lifeguards to operate all of its seasonal water attractions this summer.

Two years ago, the city could not open Kanemoto and Roosevelt activity pools due to staffing shortages. However, both activity pools reopened in 2023 and will welcome swimmers once again, this summer.

“We are rocking it right now. We would like to hire, probably, about another 20 lifeguards or so, that would be really nice,” Taylor said.

Longmont offers lifeguard certification classes and provides discounted enrollment rates to future city employees.

Interested applicants can email [email protected] to learn more about city lifeguard positions.

Fifteen is the minimum age to apply for a lifeguard position.

“If anybody is looking for an amazing summer job where they get paid to be at the pool, they need to come work for us,” Taylor said.

Sunset Pool, 1900 Longs Peak Ave., which is heated and includes six lap lanes, a large wading area, diving boards and two waterslides, is scheduled to open May 23.

Union Reservoir Swim Beach, 461 County Road 26, will hold its pre-season opening May 25 for Memorial Day weekend. The swim beach will close Tuesday through Friday after Memorial Day and re-open again on June 1.

Roosevelt Activity Pool, 903 Eighth Ave., is scheduled to open June 4 and Kanemoto Activity Pool, 1151 South Pratt Parkway, on May 31.

“With our activity pools, they are a little older,” Taylor said. “As long as everything is in working order, those are our (opening) goals.”

The splash pads at Stephen Day Park, 1340 Deerwood Drive, and Sandstone Ranch Park, 3001 East Highway 119, will be turned on Memorial Day weekend.

“We’re hoping to have a nice, warm sunny summer and have a lot of people the whole time,” Taylor said.
