MTG Manga Releasing English Version in 2024

Magic: The Gathering fans are in for a treat as a previously Japanese-exclusive MTG manga is launching this Fall 2024 with an English version. The manga is titled “Destroy All Humans, They Can’t Be Regenerated: A Magic: The Gathering Manga” which follows the story of MTG players. It’s worth noting that the manga will contain exclusive cards upon purchase. There aren’t too many details regarding these exclusive cards but we can assume they’ll be valuable considering players can’t claim them in booster packs.

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming MTG Manga.

MTG Manga Origins

The MTG manga initially launched back in 2018 exclusively in Japan. “Destroy All Humans. They Can’t Be Regenerated. A Magic: The Gathering Manga” is still ongoing with its 15th volume recently coming out. It’s a bit mind-boggling to think that a manga based on an American product took six years before releasing an English version of the series. Nevertheless, it’s better late than never.

Katsura Ise, the writer of the manga, and Takuma Yakota, the manga’s artist, are yet to announce whether they plan on releasing all 15 volumes in English this Fall. It’s safe to assume that maybe half of the series or fewer could launch considering the amount of printing it involves. Aside from publishing the books, they’ll also need to print multiple copies of the volume-exclusive cards.

Story

WARNING: Before proceeding to this section of the article, readers may choose to scroll past this if they wish to keep the story a mystery.

Based on the premise of the story, it appears that the Commander format won’t make an appearance in the series. The MTG manga follows the story of Hajime Kanou, a junior high school student. Hajime is obsessed with Magic: The Gathering as he brings his decks to school every day to play with his friends. The story takes place in the year 1998, during what some might argue are the glory days of Magic.

As Hajime continues to play with his friends in school, his academic rival Emi Sawatari constantly scolds him. Naturally, Hajime sees her as a buzzkill, but little does he know that Emi also plays Magic: The Gathering. One day, Hajime visited a local game store where he stumbled upon Emi playing Magic. Not only was he surprised by his rival playing the game, it was more baffling to find out that she was considered to be one of the best players in the shop. This ultimately led to the start of an unlikely friendship between the rivals.

Promo Cards

The fun part of being an MTG player is the collecting aspect of the game. Many players love opening booster packs and trying their luck at pulling expensive and staple cards. Others prefer buying singles to add to their collection. Fortunately, buying one volume of the MTG Manga doesn’t take away the collecting experience.

All 15 volumes of “Destroy All Humans. They Can’t Be Regenerated. A Magic: The Gathering Manga” has one promo card inside. Each promo card is unique so players don’t have to worry about acquiring the same card unless they purchase multiple copies of one particular volume.

Here’s a full list of each card in their respective volumes:

  • Volume 1 — Diabolic Edict
  • Volume 2 — Shock
  • Volume 3 — Duress
  • Volume 4 — Voltaic Key
  • Volume 5 — Dark Ritual
  • Volume 6 — Crop Rotation
  • Volume 7 — Counterspell
  • Volume 8 — Bone Shredder
  • Volume 9 — Disenchant
  • Volume 10 — Wild Growth
  • Volume 11 — Frantic Search
  • Volume 12 — Worn Powerstone
  • Volume 13 — Avalanche Riders
  • Volume 14 — Culling the Weak
  • Volume 15 — Snuff Out

It’s worth noting that these are all Japanese versions of the cards. The creators of the manga and Wizards of the Coast are yet to announce whether the English versions will contain the same set of cards. In the meantime, at least fans are already guaranteed to get promo cards when the English versions come out.
