Reading time of Mexicans reaches minimum of six years – El Financiero

The Reading of books in Mexico It moderated to 3.2 copies in the last 12 months, being the lowest figure in six years, when in 2018 there were 3.1 books, according to the Reading Module (Molec) of the INEGI.

With the results obtained for 2024, there are already two years with decreases, after reaching its maximum of 3.9 books in one year in 2022, and then decreasing to 3.4 copies in 2023 and subsequently settling at 3.2 books this year.

INEGI’s Molec has data since 2015 and since then the average number of books read in a year has not exceeded four copies.

“Among the book-reading population, the entertainment was positioned as the main reason for reading, with 41.4 percent; They continue work or study, with 23.4 percent, and general culture, with 23.2 percent,” highlighted the Institute.

By gender, the literature, with 39.4 percent of readers who chose this type of reading; 31.0 percent leaned toward self-help or personal improvement books; 29.6 percent for some subject or profession; 20.7 percent for general culture, and 7.9 percent read manuals or guides.

Molec data also reveal that, in 2024, 69.6 percent of the literate population aged 18 and over read some of these materials: books, magazines, newspapers, comics or Internet pages, forums or blogs.


This percentage is slightly above 2023, when it was 68.5 percent and which is the lowest proportion since 2015, when records began.

“The decline in the reading population was more pronounced among men, whose indicator went from 86.7% in 2015 to 69.9% in 2024. In the case of women, it decreased from 81.9 to 69.3%,” added the INEGI.

As for the reading time per session, It is observed that men allocated 42 minutes and women 39 minutes, which on average is 41 minutes, only one minute more than the 2015 figure.

Regarding Molec materials, the most read were books, with 41.8 percent; the internet pages, forums or blogs was 39.4 percent; magazines, 21.7 percent; newspapers, 17.8 percent and comics, 4.6 percent.
