A security guard at Hospital Restauração, the largest unit in the public network in Recife, in Pernambuco, died after being hit by gunfire from a patient there in the early hours of Friday, 26. Nivaldo Bezerra da Silva, aged 66, was shot twice, another employee was also shot at, but was not injured thanks to his bulletproof vest.
In a press conference with the local press, the hospital director, Petrus Andrade Lima, confirmed that Silva was performing his last shift at work before retirement. “He is in the process of retiring and today was his last shift,” he said.
According to the manager, the crime happened during a shift change between employees. In this process, the security guards pass the weapons on to the colleague who will assume the position, it was at that moment that a patient took one of the weapons. Silva was hit while trying to retrieve the object.
The shooter was also killed while trying to escape the scene.
The Pernambuco Civil Police stated in a statement that they were investigating the case as a completed double homicide and an attempted murder. The incident was registered and is under the responsibility of the 2nd Homicide Police Station. The corporation stated that more information about the case will only be released at an appropriate time.
Hospital Restauração did not detail the circumstances that led the unit’s patient to steal the weapon and try to flee the scene.
