Married population in Mexico slightly prevails over singles – El Financiero

In the prelude to the celebration of February 14the INEGI revealed that, in Mexico, 36.9 percent of the population aged 15 years or older reported being married, a percentage slightly higher than the 33.1 percent who live single.

With a smaller proportion, 17.8 percent live in a common law union; 4.4 percent are separated; 1.9 percent are divorced and 5.9 percent are widowed, according to data corresponding to the third quarter of 2023.

“The marital situation is closely related to the age of the population. The majority of young people between 15 and 29 years old were single (72.7 percent), while among adults between 30 and 59 years old, married people predominated (48.5 percent),” he said. the INEGI.

Of people aged 60 and over, 52.6 percent are married and 23.2 percent said they were widowed.

In addition, the INEGI showed that in 2022, 507,052 marriages were registered, of which, 98.9 percent were between spouses of different sexes and 1.1 percent, between same-sex couples.

While in that year there were 166,766 divorces, of these 99.6 percent were in heterosexual couples. The average length of marriage that divorced was 17.7 years.

In 52 percent of marriages, both parties worked; in 38.6 percent, the man worked and the woman did not; In 1.6 percent of couples, neither party worked and in 0.8 percent, the woman worked and the man did not.

‘Love is in the cash’

An economic spill of about 28 billion pesos will leave the celebration of this Wednesday, February 14, Day of Love and Friendship, according to projections from the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco Servytur).

“For this February 14 and the following weekend, the 257 affiliated Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism have high expectations of an increase in sales due to the festival of Valentine’s Day“, forecasting an increase of 12 percent with respect to the economic injection registered in 2023,” the private initiative projected.

Among the main industries that will benefit are hotels and lodging, restaurants, department stores, candy sales and flower shops.
