The head of United States diplomacy, Antony Blinken, congratulated, this Monday (5), Nayib Bukele on his re-election as President of El Salvador and reminded him that his country will continue to prioritize “human rights”.

Bukele, who announced his re-election on Sunday after receiving more than 85% of the votes, imposed an exceptional regime in the country in March 2022 that has already resulted in almost 76,000 detainees.

In a statement, Blinken says he “looks forward to working” with Bukele, who he said has pulverized the opposition by winning nearly every seat in Congress thanks to his controversial “war” on gangs, and with vice-president-elect Félix Ulloa after his inauguration. of both in June.

But the head of American diplomacy insisted that “looking to the future, the United States will continue to prioritize good governance, inclusive economic prosperity, guarantees of a fair trial and human rights.”

A not innocuous statement, given that organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch denounce arbitrary arrests, torture and deaths in prison in El Salvador.

The Secretary of State praised the work of the election observers and described as “solid” the relationship “with the people of El Salvador, forged over 160 years and built on shared values, regional ties and family connections.”

“Only by working together can we reach our full potential and overcome the greatest obstacles” in Latin America and globally, Blinken said, adding that “events in El Salvador have a direct impact on United States interests at home and abroad.”
