Unirio teachers decide to join national strike | Rio de Janeiro

Professors at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) decided to join the strike for an indefinite period from May 2nd. The decision was announced during a meeting held this Thursday (25). In a vote, 70 teachers were in favor of launching the strike and another 30 voted to maintain the “state of strike”.

The Unirio Teachers’ Association (Adunirio) demands more budget for universities, in addition to salary recovery, which varies from 22.71% to 34.32%, depending on the category. Adunirio also defends the occupation of public space on campus in a unified strike.

“How does this reduction appear in our daily lives? Unfinished works, lack of basic equipment such as air conditioning, chairs, tables and boards; lack of equipment for laboratories; absence of teachers’ rooms in several departments; presence of mold and infiltration in rooms classrooms and offices; poor bathroom conditions”, says material from the Local Mobilization Command (MBL).

Teachers at universities, institutes and federal technological education centers began a national strike on the 15th. In Rio, the movement began with the strike of technical-administrative education employees (TAE), responsible for the administration, finance and human resources sectors.

Six days ago, professors from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and the Celso Suckow da Fonseca Federal Center for Technological Education (Cefet-RJ) also approved an indication of the start of a strike. At Cefet, classes will be suspended from May 2nd. At UFF, the strike begins on Monday (29).

The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) remain in a “state of strike”evaluating the progress of the category’s negotiations with the federal government.

Across the country, the National Union of Teachers of Higher Education Institutions (Andes) reported that teachers from 28 federal institutions are on strike and that there are indications of a strike in nine other institutions.
